The Tonight Show 03/25/91

#1 Post by FantasticVoyage »

Hi!

I've just seen the famous Tonight Show where Chris walked off stage in the middle of "Where The Streets...".
I just wanna know if they've ever commented it. If so, I'd like to know more about it...

Can somebody here tell me?

Thanx! 8)

It's documented in the book, 'Pet Shop Boys versus America' by Chris Heath.

Well, thanx for the answer, but could somebody tell me more? I'm sorry, but I can't buy the book right now and I just wanna know. :) Could someone of you who has the book scan the part for me?

Thank you.

If somebody hasn't seen it yet, feel free to PM me. 8)

Exactly. It'd be nice if someone could just take a couple of moments to answer the question for people without the book.

I have that book somewhere I will take a look when i get home from work.

All I remember is that NBC was pissed and wont ever let PSB back. They were like "Nobody walks off The Tonight Show!!"

Chris was pissed because they set up the equipment really bad and he said it looked cheap. Then when they started to shoot the dancers messed up and they were not shooting Chris at all. But they had lots of shots of the dancers and Neil so he just left.

hope that is what your looking for. If not i can look it up in my book

Well, they were on the Today show in 2002, so perhaps NBC had a short memory.

NBC meaning NBCs Tonight Show It was when Leno was being groomed to take over for Johnny C.

where did you ses the clip?

the full drama is recounted between pages 74 - 91 of psb vs america.

the boys are booked to appear on the 'tonight show' and perform two songs - 'streets' and 'seriously'. chris is very worried beforehand and calls the shows director to ensure that despite the fact that they'll be performing with two dancers, jj belle and scott davidson, it is made clear that the psb are a duo.

the show is recorded in real time; chris can see one of the camera monitors as they perform 'streets' and to his mounting horror and anger, realises that the cameras have barely looked at him. feeling totally stitched up, he walks off stage mid song. neil is left to continue the song minus chris. he is interviewed by jay leno alone. chris refuses to perform 'seriously' until they reshoot 'steets'. realising this isn't going to happen, chris leaves the studio.

That is the story I remember too JMH.
What a great book that is: 'PSB versus America'. I loved 'Literally' too though. Very dry humour in places. I laughed my *ss off!
