I Made My Excuses and Left But Was All Alone Again already

#1 Post by wirral39 »

In 2004, Divine Comedy released a cracker of an album called Absent Friends. The standout track was Our Mutual Friend, which tells the story of someone who finds someone they love in someone else's arms. The more I hear Fundamental, the more I think the standout track is I Made My Excuses And Left. Maybe I just like 'rude awakening' songs.

By the way, I would have thought it would be more effective to put the 'I'm all alone again' section at the end of the song, because it would be like Neil walking home from the room, rather than at the start, although I guess it does build some tension at the start.

yeah that does make sense. I still wish there was a second verse, but I think that would be pointless as the song pretty much centers around that one incident so I doubt it would have made sense to drag it out and make it longer with a second verse.

such as he made his excuses and left....but then outside he realized his friend had the car keys and he had endure even FURTHER further embarresment and go back in and meekly ask for them....then leave again.

so,I think its good as it is.

My other half actually thinks that the song should end after "I made my excuses and left". She reckons that the song is all about that one moment and so the song should just stop right there. I see her point, but love the final refrain. I'm glad that there is no more than that though - the song says what it needs to say and then stops before it overstays its welcome.
Love comes quickly, but is a catastrophe and a bourgeois construct etc.

I've been quite conflicted with the ending of this brilliant song. Sometimes I want an acoustic sounding second verse at the end and then a repeat chorus to finish, but then other times I find ending where it does to be total magic as it leaves me wanting more and challenges the standard pop song structure.
An extended version would be blissful though - perhaps extending the intro even more? I dunno.

Anyway its a career highlight in my opinion.

In addition to how I like the song anyway, I'm giving this song a special positive mark for not having a refrain. Only a few in PSB archive don't have either.
