"There You'll Be" and "Numb"

Things in common between "Numb" and the song "There You'll Be" of Faith Hill (Pearl Harbour soundtrack). Both songs have been written by Diane Warren, the orchestal director is Nick Ingman and the producer is Trevor Horn.

If the second song had success, why not Numb?. Or do you think "There You'll Be" is better than "Numb"?.

Absolutely. I think "Numb" is Warren below her best. Remember she doesn't write tons of hits, she writes a big hit now and again. She writes lots of songs that doesn't become hits - Numb is one of them. Aerosmith was right in turning it down.

I think its almost impossible to know whats a hit until the masses hear it and do what they do. I think technically any of the hits she has done if we were to hear them before release we most likely would think all her songs were crappy.

I think songs like" I dont want to miss a thing" are so cliche yet they were monster hits.

I happen to love "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing". I don't think it's particularly hard to predict whether a power ballad is going to be a hit or not.

I think the song is going to get MOR airplay. It will be a major hit if they have it on a soundtrack and a decent video.
But done wrong, they will have egg on their face.

All of Warren's big hits have an "uplifting" quality to them - hence the term "power ballads". Numb isn't really a power ballad at all - there's nothing uplifting about it. It's not a hit record, period.

I see a video a bit like Miracles, floaty and arty with virtually no PSB. Though I wouldn't mind Michael Owen playing Chris. But who'd play Neil? Sven?

Compared to the likes of If I Could Turn Back Time it's not, but just because it's not the bog-standard "power ballad" doesn't mean it can't be a bit hit. I know lots of non-fans who say this is the best thing on Fundamental.

Can anyone remember what that song was Diane W wrote for Dusty?
