The general perception of PSB before Neil came out?

It may be an uban myth, but I understood only one of the Village People was actually gay. I'm sure their Bob Saunders-like svengali was though. (Jaques Morali? Or something like that...)Danimal wrote:At least in my part of the USA, most people didn't think about a musical artists sexuality until about 1990. In Michigan in the 80s, nobody seemed to pick up on: the fact that Freddy Mercury was gay, the singer from Judas Priest was gay, PSB were gay. f***, they didn't even seem to get that Boy George was gay (they just thought it was all a "gimic"). Of course, America didn't realize that the Village People were gay until about 1980. Unfortunately, right around 1990, everybody seemed to develop "gaydar." Many of the younger people didn't really mind, but didn't rush out to buy these artists records, they just tolerated their "gayness."
PSB defintely did better in the US through the Introspective period (although Introspective was only top 40 while Please was top 10 and Actually I believe was top 30 (although they had 3 top 5 singles off it)). I'm not sure whether this was due to the strength of their material and how it coinicided with the "pop" sound going on in the US at the time or the perception of their sexuality...

In fact the members of Village People were not gay. I've read and heard somewhere that all of them were straight men. The group was just conceived to appear as a "gay act".Danimal wrote:At least in my part of the USA, most people didn't think about a musical artists sexuality until about 1990. What does it matter, as long as the music is great! I am heterosexual myself, but my record collection does in fact include a big lot of "gay" music: PSB, Erasure, Magnetic Fields, Queen, R.E.M., Rufus Wainwright, Morrissey (whatever he is...) + I like ABBA and Eurovision Song Contest...

WOW i admire you for that - as Schopenhauer said, if you worry about what other people think about you, your paying them too much honor.joncool5 wrote:I got into PSB around the Very period and everyone i knew thought they were gay even though Neil hadn't come out at that point. It wasn't cool to admit liking PSB but i still wore a PSB t-shirt on non-uniform day.
Cheers

I wonder why I always start to like artists who are or have been treated as "uncool". The same as PSB applies to ABBA and many Eurovision Song Contest artists.Hillbilly wrote:In fact the members of Village People were not gay. Perhaps it's because I don't like ROCK music. I'm looking for a completely different credibility. And I hope that Neil and Chris hate rock music enough never to make it themselves...!
