"Fundamental" not in US Sunday Ads

#1 Post by VinnyM27 »

I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but in our Sunday newspapers, we ususally get a bunch of ads, mostly for big chain stores that sell everything, a few groceries stores (although those now appear in with the mail) as well as larger electronic stores (Best Buy, Circuit City) and clothes stores (Sears). Well all the stores that sell CDs and DVDs ususually devote a section to whatever the bigger new releases. What appears in the ad depends on the store. A catch all store like Kmart usually wil only feature a few big really big releases (maybe India Irie). An electronics store that sells a lot of music and movies like Best Buy will ususally have a lot of titles. Well, unfornately, none of the ads feature PSB. This is very dissapointing and seems to be proof that Rhino isn't going to give this album much of a push. I vaguely remember "Release" being in the Sunday ads but I could be wrong (I remember seeing it at Meijer, which was surprising). Due to this, I'm not sure that the CD will even debut in the Top 100 like all their other studio releases have. I mean, has their been any promotion other than Billboard's story and a few reviews in magazines? I never thought about this but could it depend on where the ad comes from? I live in Michigan, which is Blue with shades of Red, if you know what I mean. Most of the featured CDs are hip-hop....and Dashboard Confessional (are people still into Emo...We'll see).

I haven't seen any promo. I haven't seen recent issues of Rolling Stone or Spin, either. A plan might be to do some with the tour since it's looking like no US singles for the time being at least. There is, of course, the remote possibility of a push for a grammy nod (a la To Step Aside)?

Speaking of which, I recall a full color ad in Rolling Stone for Bilingual...

There's nothing in the magazines I read, but I'm not sure I'm the demographic they should target. They did get a review in the Villiage Voice. There was a review in pitchfork, but the review was stupid and I'm not sure how important pitchfork is anymore. The crowd that reads The Onion would be a good target, but I didn't see a review there yet.

Now having just seen the video for minimal, I could see this on MTV hits (the digital cable channel I get in the 200's)--which actually plays a little bit of a variety of music, including the occasional dance song. This is the first PSB video I've seen in a long time that I thought could get any US airplay just by virtue of content and production value. It probably won't, but it's a good effort in my view.
