Totally in agreement with that.

I couldn't give a toss about the chart! They got into the top 20, that's good enough. I can't believe people are so upset about it

Exactly. As I always point out ' The Crazy Frog' record was a number one hit in the UK and Australia. That speaks volumes....

The charts are extremely pointless
what a performance tonight, should I react or turn off the light ?

To put things into perspective, Shayne Wards first single, last Christmas, sold over 700,000 in its first week. His third single, last month, peaked at number 22. So if people are upset about Minimal at number 19, check out Shayne Wards collapse in just 6 months.

It entered at #14 then fell to 20something.
Your point is valid though. Robbie William's last single made #22 and I think Sugagbabes only just made the top 30 with their last ditty.

Thanks for correcting me. I was meant to write about Williams as well but got distracted by my horses finishing second again. A Robbie Williams single peaking at 22 is a disaster. Especially for someone who totally dominates the charts.

Does the chart # matter?

yes, but its only part of the story and the second in importance.

What really matters is sales. Would you prefer to have a #1 album that sold 500.000, or a#5 that sold 1.000.000 copies? I know id say screw #1 give me the extra half a million copies sold. Ill dance all the way to the bank, while listining to Opportunities of course :D

If either I'm with stupid or Minimal had been a huge hit there would presumably have been little doubt. More singles equals more bonus tracks and remixes and videos and that is what I want as a fan.

Exactly. chart positions matter because more success = more singles which = more b-sides and remixes. To me, that is a good thing.

Plus its nice to see PSB rewarded for their hard work.

I think people are getting the cart before the horse.

The chart doesn't matter. The playlist matters. If the grotesque ponytails that comprise the media cabal that dictates what we're exposed to on the radio and TV stations come out of their witches' coven with your single listed en masse, then the chart will merely reflect this decision and - all things being equal - return your band to the higher echelons of the "hit parade". If not, and this has been the case for the PSBs for a decade, then you will live and die by distribution exigencies, format enticements, and fanbase loyalty.

PSB records are no longer played en masse on commercial radio. They don't fit the "target audience" that the ponytails are "targeting." The singles chart merely reflects this state of affairs.

Given the current UK singles chart rules, in the absence of a brand new b-side to stick on the 2-track CD single, a band may as well not bother releasing a radio edit of an existing, freely available track as a single. Fans require an incentive. As fans are all that the band now sells to, only a brand new single that does not reside on a previously released album will do if a suitably enticing b-side cannot be provided (as was the case with the disappointing Minimal package). Either way, it all points to fewer singles and rush-released compensatory live album packages and Disco 3-style sops.

I gave up hope of them ever having another number 1 back in 2001/2002
WOW! That's late. I more or less gave up hope after Domino Dancing. Back then pop groups didn't use to last more than a few years and the poor chart performance of Domino dancing seemed to indicate that Dumpersville was beckoning. Thankfully PSB are still here 18 years later!

Oh, actually, for a week or so I hoped Go West would do it when they jumped to number two back in 1993
The CELL by Stephen King instantly hit number 1 in New York Times Bookseller Lists selling well over 200 thousand copies in three weeks. This affirms my opinion: People really need an occassional good horror read...

Compared to PSB the Sugababes and(especially) Robbie had infinitely bigger selling albums both here + worldwide at the point of those single releases ( + Robbie fans can use all the excuses you use for PSBs lack of (your expected) success). The point is both those singles ALONE helped their parent albums sell more than fundamental ever will in its whole lifetime! With such huge album sales the potential for casual single sales is much reduced (see my Dido example - when albums have sold wel,l poor charting singles are not a disaster or the sign of a career collapsing!),they are not important in term of record company proffit unless they sell by the bucketload

The most you can say is that robbie's hardcore single buying fanbase is not as strong as PSB's but that hardly matters when not one of his many albums has sold less than 4P in this country alone. He is guaranteed huge sales for his next album even if they are less than his previous, few people have such a good run - PSB were more successful a singles band cf. there album achievements (especially when compared to the likes of robbie).

To just say Rob's single charting at 22 is a DISASTER shows how ignorant you are of the chart and how biased you are to put up misinformation in order to make PSBs achievements seem better than they are to fulfil your fanatical desires. Its very easy to dimiss chart success, but for a band that has thrived on it eventually because of practical limitations it could prematurely end the production of new PSB music...

I just remembered who you remind me of UT....the PSB version of erasure fanatic miniac MIG :wall:

Most people really don't care about singles.

Non fans of PSB who like their music will buy the album. Most of them will not see any point at all in buying the single of a track they already have and care very little about obscure remixes by people they have never heard of.

I don't buy singles by ANY other artists! But I do buy their albums........
And you say you never believed in luck
