Well at least Minimal kept Fundamental inside the top 200 for a month. Numb won't even do that.! wrote:So why didn't Minimal have the desired effect then? Fundamental was dead in the water before Numb came out, so stop bitchin'.jamie1978 wrote:If all they have are shitty ballads and a few decent uptempo songs, well, you don't release a poor effort like Numb for the sake of variety. Is Numb about to be PSB lowest charting single?

Just been in my own little world listening to the fab Fundamental album (on headphones).
Can't believe they edited Numb the way they did. I mean the album version is so strong & powerful (as is the PSB Demo). The new radio edit version , well no words can describe the poor effort put into it's new production. They edited the long intro, fair enough this cut out nearly 35 secs of the song. The distinctive note changes at 1 min & 51 secs should have stayed as should the 2nd verse. Those note changes could have been used again at 3 mins & 56 secs & 4 mins & 06 secs (not on the album version either). The single version would still have been under 4 mins long with this kind of edit, surely short enough for radio play. Diane Warren wrote the song so the boys shouldn't take all the guff which is floating around Numb at the moment. More to the point i think Numb has been the ONLY song in the Pet Shop Boys career that has taken so much criticism. Then comes the big potential of Integral. Must have been produced with a single release in mind (in fact i remember it was going to be the 1st single off Fundie). The length of the album version means NO edit should be made...P E R F E C T.
( That's why Numb is sitting at #23. Still,not the lowest!!! ).

god, i can't believe how people go on about how crappy "numb" is blaming that for the poor charting. face it, it was the third single from the album. it was bound to chart low, esp. since "fundamental" has done much better than "release" and "nightlife." (no1 in 10 countries on the i tunes charts) "minimal" was fantastic and yet it was no hit. and yet there are people on this forum who think it's because "minimal" was a crappy choice for a single and would have rather seen "SAGS" released. the pets' imperial phase has been over for years now. so no matter how great the singles are, they're never gonna have another huge hit. so stop blaming it on the allegedlly poor quality of "numb!" was " being boring " so bad that it charted at #20? no, it just happened to be this way and now it's considered their masterpiece.
grow up, people and stop this "what a shitty single" crap! and as long as they keep releasing great albums and are invited to lots of festivals, i don't care about the charts. my word!

After reading the 5 pages on Numb-bashing and whether or not the PSB will release a 4th single, I kinda have to agree with AliG.. Does it really matter that it reaches a lowly 23 in the charts.... So what if we don't get a 4th single...it's not the end of the world...
After 20 years, for a 'pop' group to be releasing quality music and receiving critical praise (4 stars in Q magazine...
) as well as performing sold out shows at venues such as Radio City Music Hall....well, it's a great achievement
15 years ago "Was it Worth It" reached #24 and two years later they released "Very"..
..
I grew up with the PSB, from the 7" single days.....and feel fortunate that I am not having to wait for an "essential" or "best of" collections with Christmas coming up like so many artists of the 80's/90's...
One things for sure, if Neil and Chris read these posts they'll think twice of recording the Diane Warren back catalogue that was I read about on the www....
Only joking....LOL

That's pretty interesting. I wonder why PSB have such poor online sales? I bought all the online stuff that wasn't on CD/DVD for each Fundamental release. What did other people on here do?london city boy wrote:Top 20 Physical Chart.

My understanding is that the single track itself or a remix of it has to be downloaded for it to be included in the chart. If you downloaded the "Psychological" remix from the "Numb" release for example, or the extended version of "The Resurrectionist", then those sales count for nothing.moxlox wrote:That's pretty interesting. The remixes of "I'm with Stupid" and "Minimal" were bland and lifeless on the whole so no wonder they weren't downloaded by many people.

That can be answered with the most cursory glance at Catalogue. PSB still hark back to a time when pop was conceptual and fully realised as an art form. Now it doesn't actually matter who is in Razorlight or why The Kooks sound like Cast when they're from Brighton. It's the soundtrack to our ever-shifting, live in the moment culture and flight from the fear of ennui.moxlox wrote:I wonder why PSB have such poor online sales?

'Numb' was released because it had such a profound effect after the World Cup. I only buy singles from the bands I follow because of the B-sides anyway. Having said that, PSB are notoriously bad at choosing singles. 'Before' as a lead single, anyone? Look, I wish everyone would just face the FACT that PSB won't rule the charts in this 'X Factor' era. Who cares about singles anyway? New album please.
