40 CONSECUTIVE top 30 singles....

So what if Numb stalled at 23? Its surprising it got that high considering i went to Virgin, Woolworths and HMV and all i could find between them was four copies of CD1..
Why bother having charts anymore if Woolworths dictates to us whats going to be a "Hit" or not. They might as well just stick Justin Timberlake in every position of thier top 20 shelf and be done with it!!
Still, at 23, Numb became the boys 40th consecutive top 30 single (i'm including Absolutely fabulous). Depeche Mode havent achieved this, U2 havent achieved this, The Beatles Havent achieved this, nor has Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley, UB40, Status Quo, Rolling Stones, Queen....shall i go on?
I very much doubt the likes of Coldplay, Justin Trousersnake, Christina Slutilera or other so called "music stars" will ever have 40 singles in thier career never mind 40 top 30 ones.
I for one, instead of chastising Numb and moaning about bad single choices, feel proud of this achievment by the boys and look forward to 40 more!!!

It's indeed a great achievement, although we're officially at 39 Pet Shop Boys singles now. The next one will be the 40th.

I would have preferred Numb in the UK Top 20, though. Before Numb, PSB had a string of 20 UK Top 20 singles in a row.

And what the most amazingly in this case (at least, for me): obviously, this is not the end of PSB' charts marathon. Well, I never believed in charts' truth, but this fact is extremely pleasantly to realise (oh, do I become fanatic a bit more?...). Look forward to couple of next months they'll mentioned Integral as their fortieth Top30 single on official site... It's would be great conclusion of anniversary. Come on, Boys, keep the legend alive. Uphold your reputation. Do the best.

Depeche Mode have released 45 singles, but their consecutive track record is scuppered by at least one single that was an import only but still charted at #60 (Little 15 in 1988), one deliberately ineligible-for-chart single (Goodnight Lovers in 2002) and an accident #75 hit in 2004 for Something To Do, which basically was one of the ETS '04 formats, but because it didn't actually include any remix of ETS, it charted on its own to everybody's surprise. However, it would be unfair to claim that there really is that much difference to PSB's benefit longevity-wise.

Little 15 was a strange single. The French record company released it there because they were convinced it would be a hit, but the demand for import copies in the UK was so great, that the UK record company made it belatedly available in England too. So it wasn't really a proper single, because there were no promotion at all nor any release date. The situation is comparable to if PSB's London had charted in 2002 on import sales.

With downloads accounting for 75% of the singles chart, the fact the Woolworths doesn't have it shouldn't really matter. But of course, it does matter for PSB because their buyers are not making the move to the d/l market.

PSB should consider a new approach to marketing their singles. They used to lead the way in packaging and design. Although Minimal had some beautiful design elements, Numb just looks like they couldn't be bothered. Now they have to come up with a new approach.

Keane released their latest single on USB memory key - PSB have to come up with these sort of ideas again to prompt people to buy something that is, after all, a dying market.
