The reason they are so well supported outside of their citites is because they are so successful. Everton and Man City have struggled for a long time now. Everton have won a cup and are looking like a half decent side but spent many years fighting relegation and Man City have just clawed their way back from division 2.

Knocking a clubs support that comes from outside the city is usually down to envy and jealousy. Every club would love the support that Liverpool and United get. They would also love the history of success they have gained.

I still hate the fu*kin lot of them though ;)

Dave
I actually think that you should support your nearest club. If they play in the Conference or Unibond League then so be it. Obviously family is going to have a major impact on who you support but if you can make your mind up go for the local team. If you look at Greater Manchester Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and even Bolton struggle due to Utd and a lesser extent City. I genuinely think that if you support a club from another area that you can never feel as passionately about that club. I've been doing a study on football stadia and Fulham fans care so passionately about their club and Craven Cottage while Utd fans seem so more passive, with most Utd fans involved in the study coming from anywhere but Manchester!

I might not live in Doncaster (through no choice of my own!), but by Christ I have not an ounce of passion for Bedworth United, Nuneaton Borough or Coventry City and never will. The distance thing means nothing. I'm Donny through and through, and that includes my football team. Three hours of driving on a home matchday to watch the Rovers play. Each and every home game! That's passion! ;)

Well i don't live in Blackpool but i support the team where i was born. I quite like City and Altrincham and despise Utd but nothing compares to the Seasiders!

Well I was born in Birmingham (Solihull, same thing) & support the local team. But this City has 2 teams (Other one Villa) If you come from the south side of Brum you tend to support BCFC & the North side Villa.
Attitudes are materialistic

I'm sorry, but claiming off the bat that somebody's opinion is worth "horseshit" is offensive - laughably so. I've no problem with you being offensive - but you could at least not be in denial about it. To use the term "Shut The f*** Up" in defending your position simply shows you to be semi-literate and exposes your rather limited command of what is purportedly your native tongue.

How about answering the original question, troll?
Troll? LOL! You've not been here long...

There was an original question, was there? All I could see was an hysterical foul-mouthed over-reaction to a bit of playful ribbing. I'll discuss whatever it is you wish to discuss when your command of the English language justifies the effort.

Of course they are. Just as Arsenal are far bigger than Spurs, Real Madrid are far bigger than Atletico, Juventus are far bigger than Torino, etc., etc.

Of coure you will see plenty of Everton and City shirts in their respective cities, you will also see plenty of Liverpool and United shirts.
Indeed, but it's remarkable to see the over-reaction of some when one's perception is that the so-called smaller clubs have the bigger local support.
The reason they are so well supported outside of their citites is because they are so successful. Everton and Man City have struggled for a long time now. Everton have won a cup and are looking like a half decent side but spent many years fighting relegation and Man City have just clawed their way back from division 2.
Exactly. Success breeds success and attracts a wider fanbase - often from abroad.
Knocking a clubs support that comes from outside the city is usually down to envy and jealousy.
Or just a little fun. It's remarkable how sensitive some get when "confronted" with the reality that their club has a large non-local fanbase.
Every club would love the support that Liverpool and United get. They would also love the history of success they have gained.
Some clubs are quite happy, however, with their own tradition in the game - while obviously looking for future successes.

Drico.

PS The following is taken from A Profile of FA Premier League Club Supporters by the University of Leicester:

"In 2000, 70% of the whole sample were 'locally born' (within 20 miles of the club ground). There is a strong 'northern' effect here, with Middlesbrough, Bradford City, Newcastle United, Everton and Sunderland all having over 80% of season ticket fans who are locally born. At Liverpool and Leeds United, however, the figure is lower, and for this, perhaps unusual, Manchester United sample, it is down to just 46%. Wimbledon also has a very strong 'non-local' fan base accentuated, perhaps, since the club's move to play at Selhurst Park."

Nothing unusual there, but one wonders if it will provoke another hilariously combustive explosion in these here parts...

It's also true. You see, what you wrote was of little worth, and round these parts, "horseshit" is generally considered to be of little worth, hence my use of the term. You are free to disagree, as I'm sure you will.
I've no problem with you being offensive - but you could at least not be in denial about it. To use the term "Shut The f*** Up" in defending your position simply shows you to be semi-literate and exposes your rather limited command of what is purportedly your native tongue.
No, at the very most it shows me to be rude when confronted by extreme idiocy. Use of foul language is not the preserve of the ignorant classes. Being "semi-literate" and possessing "limited command" of English is not the same thing as being offensive. In fact, your apparent inability to understand this might suggest that it is you, and not me, who needs lessons in literacy.
There was an original question, was there? All I could see was an hysterical foul-mouthed over-reaction to a bit of playful ribbing. I'll discuss whatever it is you wish to discuss when your command of the English language justifies the effort.
There's nothing wrong with my command of the English language, you arrogant little man. And there wasn't anything "playful" about your ribbing, it was every bit as pompous as all your other recent posts in this thread.

Are you going to back up your opinion with evidence or will you ST... retract your ill-supported remark?

Hello. If you think that piece of research supports your assertion that (and I quote) "Everton are the biggest supported club inside the city of Liverpool", then you're failing logic. Big time.

Here are two statements drawn from that study:

Statement 1: Most Everton fans are from Liverpool.
Statement 2: Most Liverpool fans are not from Liverpool.

Your conclusion: Most people from Liverpool are Everton fans.

Now, as a science graduate (and ex-journalist) I understand that those two statements do NOT support the conclusion you are arriving at. You are making a logical fallacy. You are making a mockery of your pretensions to intellectualism (LOOK MA I CAN USE BIG WERDS NOT LIKE THE NAUGHTY SWEARING MAN).

Now, can we PLEASE leave all this ridiculous verbal sparring to one side, and will you (a) provide evidence that most people in Liverpool are Everton fans or (b) retract the statement?

It's alright these surveys coming up with this info but what they fail to tell you is how many season tickets have been sold.

Maybe Everton fans don't need season tickets because they know they will get in to the match if they want to go. A mate of mine supports Everton and he goes to most games and he doesn't have a season ticket. This is virtually impossible to do at Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea Spurs and Newcastle.

Of course, Dave, but the mere posting of this quote - without any attempt to manipulate it or propagandise - has our Liverpool-supporting friend doing hysterical handstands. Here's another one for him:

"Everton are a bigger club than Liverpool. Everywhere you go on Merseyside you bump into Everton supporters."

Graeme Souness

I take this quote - or misquote even - for what it is: a flippant remark that was no doubt taken out of context. But, you know, it's a great stirrer...

Drico.

PS I'm expecting "na, na, na-na, nas" by 5.15 today given the level of discourse in this thread.

You can forget that. You got comprehensively owned, which is why you refuse to back your argument up with facts.

So far as I'm concerned, the argument is over and I won it. Nice work, loser.

PS and stop trolling

I think nothing of the sort. I posted a selected quote from a particular study to see you over-react, and bingo: you over-reacted!

Here are two statements drawn from that study:

Statement 1: Most Everton fans are from Liverpool.
Statement 2: Most Liverpool fans are not from Liverpool.

Your conclusion: Most people from Liverpool are Everton fans.
I made no conclusion, whatsover. LOL! In fact, I made no comment on that quote at all.
Now, as a science graduate (and ex-journalist) I understand that those two statements do NOT support the conclusion you are arriving at.
What conclusion? There wasn't any. This is what happens when you over-react. You are seeing things that were never said. If you actually bother to look back on my contributions to this thread (you know, the horsehit you've been ploughing through with gusto), you'll see that I simply claimed that "Everton are the biggest supported club in the city of Liverpool". This has, obviously, upset you.
You are making a logical fallacy. You are making a mockery of your pretensions to intellectualism (LOOK MA I CAN USE BIG WERDS NOT LIKE THE NAUGHTY SWEARING MAN).
And you are making a fool of yourself. Speaking of pretensions to intellectualism, I'm pleased you felt the need to inform us that you are a science graduate and ex-journalist. Racie's a journalist too, you know...
.Now, can we PLEASE leave all this ridiculous verbal sparring to one side, and will you (a) provide evidence that most people in Liverpool are Everton fans or (b) retract the statement?

If I had ever claimed in this thread that most people in Liverpool are Everton fans, I'd be happy to comply. However, and inconveniently in this case, I said that Everton are the best supported club in the city of Liverpool. One of your mental gifts would undoubtedly appreciate the difference, what with your science degree and all.

In the meantime, perhaps you could ask Graeme Souness. ;)

I'm surprised Souness dared to walk the streets of Liverpool after his 'efforts' at Anfield as a manager.

What Graeme Souness didn't say about the Everton shirts was they were all 1984 shirts with Lineker and Trevor Steven on the back ;)
