This is TODAYs problem! I've booked W-F off in order to fix PC1 and PC2.
I want to get Windows up and running nice too.
Today I have been wrestling my media PC2.
I have had a while where PC has locked up, locked up and rebooted and now continuous beep (especially playing Media Player).
Nothing seemed to fix it...
I added a new power supply first with 550 instead of 450 as better and not much more.
I tried different combinations of the RAM.
I reseated the heatsink on the PSU.
Disconnected CDROMs and floppy temp (partly as had to convert an old connector and power splitter so as to adapt new power supply to have two floppy connectors) Quite easy join them together with screw connector blocks.
Everything seemed to indicate RAM, motherboard or Graphics.
I ruled out the first two (and hoped as bigger to fix) and deduced that it were the heatsink on the graphics card. So I reseated that (and broke the holding pin, but improvised with a screw!). Still didn't work.
So sod this, had a shower and got ready for bed.
Came back to it decided to take out all cards apart from graphics and put them back.
When taking them out noticed some of the heatsink had run and dried on the connector of the graphics card. So cleaned that off with heatsink remover.
Now all of a sudden it was working.
So I added back the USB card and ditched the sound, using the onboard. Don't think there is much difference really. Seems to be okay now. Hopefully quick check tomorrow and will be okay. Bit odd though, but it has a habit of going away a while and then suddenly beeeeeeeep!
So guys, it might be a heatsink problem if your room is 30 degrees in the Summer.
I get this problem every year...change the heatsink stuff.
But earlier was crashing on playing an MP3. Now it isn't. So hope so.
P.S. The PSB relevance is I'm testing using some nice Pethead remixes of Home and Dry.

17 March 2007 - A Red Letter Day.
Sodding PC stopped the beeeeeeeep! thingy but now would periodically hang still.
So today bought a secondhand PCI card for £5 from someone who deals in such and took out the old one. So now I know it definitely is this at fault.
The heatsink stuff I got off ebay is a silvery runny goo so replaced that with some decent heatsink from PCWorld.
So in an hour off to buy a decent AGP graphics card now I know that is definitely the problem. Been playing music for past hour and no hangs or beeps as yet.
When is properly fixed (been annoying for months) now I have XP Pro SP2 OEM for it going to make it a media PC. Browsing, mail, music, tv, downloaded videos
I plan to make a nice big USB 2.5" drive sometime with lots of music on it.
Then I can access it on any PC I want to.
