Not that I'm particularly bothered, but can you envisage a scenario when PSB will ever have another big hit single (I mean top 3). What would that scenario be?

What was your age again? 53?amandote wrote:Well.. the guys are still doing great music.
The problem is another: today's music is full of crap and many people like this crap.
In the 80s and 90s the music was music if you know what I mean. How many songs really have a melody today? Have you ever thought about it?
Sorry, that's just untrue. Pick any period and you'll find majority of the songs in the chart are formulaic and forgettable trash, among which is hidden a small number of gems. That applies to 1983 as well as to 1996 or 2007. There are plenty of great records released this year: Paul Hartnoll, Patrick Wolf, Sarah Nixey, Editors, Arcade Fire, Nicolas Makelberge, Shiny Toy Guns, Cinematic Orchestra, Marsheaux, The Mary Onettes, Interpol, Bloc Party, Dntel, Maps...
PSB are just too old to have hits. That's just a sad law of the nature in pop music. Not many sixties artists had big hits in the eighties either.

This is a not sense speech. Rolling Stones are older PSB for example and one of their last singles (Streets Of Love) is become a big hit everywhere and in Italy used for a commerical of a big comunication company. I think that Amandaote has right: the music toaday is of a so low quality -and the sad thing is that people loves these songs- that talent musicians can't find space on radios and TVs. You've written a lot of singers, but I work in the music distribution in Italy and believe me I've never heard their names: only Interpol. Without to go off topic, I tihnk that for PSB it will be hard to have another top3 singles, think that now #1 in Uk is Rihanna with UmbrellaEldritch wrote:PSB are just too old to have hits.

No I wouldn't count on them having another major hit again, their moment seems to have passed, much in the same way as bands such as the Rolling Stones will never have those type of hits again. Its a generational thing and it also tends to be progressive and as such people don't look collectively look into the past when it comes to music, its unusual and unlikely for bands such as PSB to find the degree of success they once enjoyed at their peak.
The one thing that has counted against them is the fact that they've never truly disappeared from the public eye, at least not in a manner for people to yearn for their material on a nostalgic level. I think that's the only way bands of their generation would ever have another big hit; case in point, in recent years, are Blondie, who had a number 1 off the back of nostalgia.

It does happen though. You wouldn't have put money on Leo Sayer having another UK number one at the beginning of last year; Elton on a couple of "featuring" records (the dancey one and the tupac one) has scored big too.
i think a housey sample/ mash up of an old psb song would be their most likely way of gaving a big hit single again. Maybe in about 10 years.

I think that current chart music is quite healthy - and I'm 47, is that a problem? I'm still younger than Neil or Chris - but I'm not sure we'll ever see another top 3 single from the Pet Shop Boys...
Unless they team up with Madonna or Kylie or someone.
But I don't think it matters . If you care to see who were the chart regulars when the PSB were having their biggest hits very few of them - if any - are around today.
Except Madonna and Kylie....

Utter balderdash. First of all, Umbrella is a great litle pop song and miles better than 80 % of the number ones in year 1988:Fugitive1979 wrote:Exactly! There's no hope while shite like this is hanging around in the charts!Danger wrote:#1 in Uk is Rihanna with Umbrella![]()

Not really, since your age is below your avatar. But you talk like you were 53. If you ask Neil and Chris, who are both enough old to be your dads, they will enthuse about several of today's pop and indie bands. Music hasn't got any worse really, it's just that some people get stuck in the music that they love in their teens and just can't digest anything new.amandote wrote:You would be surprised to find out that I'm under 30.Eldritch wrote:
