Why aren't Pet Shop Boys popular as they were?

#1 Post by Blogo »

I love the Pets, producers, singers alike have called them the best pop duo in the last 20 years... but why do they not have the same popularity as they once did.. Look at madonna, shes been making music for twenty years and she sells millions of albums.. why isnt this the same as the Pet Shop Boys?

(New Fan + member btw :D )

PSB do not reach out to a wide audience, Madonna is a smart business woman not just a performer and great singer. She knows what she wanted in her career and she got it! Plus US market do not try to boost PSB.

Perhaps,

N&C have a little more wisdom and balance in their character than the average pop stars.

Sure they like to Make Lots Of Money, but not at the expense of karma.

So publicity is not rigorously pursued and may be... that is a good thing.

Perhaps.

Well, Michael Jackson isn't as popular as he once was.

Madonna only seems as popular because she completely disco'd and gay'd out on her last album. The sales of the previous album were poor.

I think a lot of pop acts have a shelf life. I'm just glad they're still making records.

There aren't many artists that last 22 years. And there aren't many 53/48 year olds in the charts!

Several reasons.

Let's start to say that the average music buyer is hypocrite, conservative and perhaps impulsive...

Pet Shop Boys are considered 'old', and for many people (no matter how pathetic it is) the gay issue plays a part in their decision to support bands. It's not cool to be fan of a band that makes 'gay music' (btw: In my personal dictionary the word 'gay music' doesn't exist).

Besides that, promotion of PSB albums decreased when you compare it to the late 80s and early 90s. And also the last three studio albums saw some wrong single choice. What the average music consumer gets to hear of PSB, are the singles.

But above all, I support Radiophonic's comment: I'm glad they're still in the music business after so many years! And let's not forget they are still reasonably successful.

I agree with Radiophonic, despite heavy airplay I don't think Madonna is that popular, at least in terms of record sales, anymore.
Hello my name is Neil Tennant and I'm Chris Lowe and we're of the Pet Shop Boys.

Btw Radiophonic is a good looking man, judging by the little pic... :D

As Chris once said "We are Sexeur than Madonna" and Neil has been quoted as saying "We don't sell Sex" to gain chart positions. And of course its down to Marketing etc.
They make a little go along way.. very Minimal but Fundamental.

Is true PSB do not sell sex, but Madonna is no longer a young woman, she is already going to be 49 this year so she is clocking 50 already and she is still popular. The age really does not matter.

Maybe people just think that they´re too gay. And usually people get horrified about their age when I tell them that I´m fan.

Chris:
-I´ve got a 12-inch plonker.

Being that they are gay does not matter either. Elton is gay and he is still very popular. And he is over 50. Sexual orientation and age do not have anything to do with it.

1.Pet Shop Boys are not popular becouse many people think that all they sing is about gays.
2. They do not use their 100% Pet Shop Boys potential.
3.The Quality of b-sides and mixes is lower.
4. Boring videos (let's remember Very Period).
5. They don't come to Russia (one of the main reasons)
6. People wait for another Go West or West End Girls from them, but it's impoosible, I think.

I think that maybe its to do with the way they present themselves... its very rare we see a PSB promotion on Tv... magazines.... I havent even seen the Fundamental TV promo....
