I want to add that bit of footage from 1984 singing West End Girls on some European pop show. As seen on A Life in Pop.

Chris looks great, but Neil is acting like a camp Gary Numan.

However i forgave then for this when they put View from your balcony as the the b-side, probably one of their finest ever.

New York City Boy - I really thught they crossed the line here. Such an unnecessarily camp song, and the live performances with the Studio 54 crowd and Neil in that gross shiney brown jacket - they just looked old and sounded desperate.

I concur. Only thing is, I'd keep some of the demo tracks from CTH but banish the musical itself. Speaking of which, there's also too much Frances Barber singing Friendly Fire on the Life in Pop video....

I'd also banish Numb, as a single OR an album track. I've yet to sit through the whole track.....Just can't take it.

New York city boy was the most recent PSB track (the single with Robbie Williams not counted) that received decent airplay on Dutch radio. I don't see why people dislike it so much.

Radio play in the Benelux region does not validate a song's inclusion in an otherwise near-flawless canon.

I don't think "New York city boy" did that much harm to PSB's reputation or pigeon-holed them as "gay" any more than they already were. Remember the Simpsons episode where Homer was hanging out with those gay guys. They played "West End Girls" in the background! If that song is typically "gay" then the PSB's can't be helped any way. What you can't fight against you might aswell embrace...I think that's how N&C reasoned when they released "New York city boy" and "Go West"

why do we bother about this "gay" matter so much ?!?
who cares about ?
great music is always great music, no matter the sex
people feel ambarassed because the 'boys are gay?
thank god, somebody is still shocked with sometihng!
i'm always amused when I eye the reaction on other people's face when they listen i love the pet shop boys, cause I know they associate them with the gay question..
i like having people shocked so much!i love them being so provocative!
it's 20 years and more that the 'Boys are schoking the world! be proud of it, madonna is still doing the same, too...only the great ones can!
it's a point of strength to them, not of weakness
