The Mercury Music Prize
It's that time of year again. I think that I hate this more than the Brits, MTV Video Awards and Al-Qaeda's Suicide Bomber of the Year put together. Is it a showcase for new unheard music or yet another bouquet for the Arctic Monkeys? Is that Jo Whiley or a pumpkin? Lest we forget, M-People once won it.....
who's been nominated, let me hazard a major label signed 'indie' band, no one will give a shit about in 3 years, a wet singer songwriter, a hip dance artist, a Latvian folk duo, jazz lite singer/songwriter and an ethnic pan pipe playing combo..............oh and erasure
Still waiting to hear the Adam Freeland, Manhattan Clique and Axwell mixes of Integral.

But what is the point of it? At least The Brits rewards out and out commercialism or MTV whoever is fittest. This just smacks of wanky faux indie elitism.
Arctic Monkeys - they're Northern and The Smiths aren't around anymore
Dizzee Rascal - obligatory urban artist
Jamie T - cut-price Streets
Amy Winehouse - she's massive but still *cool*
Klaxons - arty with fringes (Altern 8 would NEVER have been nominated)
The View - holy f***, it's Oasis in a skip
and the rest.....annual mix of no-hopers, ne'r-do-wells and WHO????? to fulfill the award's USP.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's good that new music gets championed but why are Arctic Moneys nominated again and why the hell did they they win it last year? Basically it should be renamed the Jo Whiley Award for dull indie folk and the prize should be a pumpkin. *rant over*

I'm stunned that Whiley's latest project, Deliciously Fruity Wine, weren't nominated.Janet Street-Porter wrote: Basically it should be renamed the Jo Whiley Award for dull indie folk and the prize should be a pumpkin. *rant over*
Passion, love, sex, money, violence, religion, injustice and death. More on that story later.
