Alternative had several tracks that had never previously been released on CD as well as variant mixes of some songs. It's also to be blunt a fantastic collection of tunes and I'm not sure we can say the same of Disco 4. At least they left off the truly embarrassing stuff like Mope and Jerusalem! The missing Blur mix is a bit of glaring in the "pop compilation" category though.

I know it's fashionable to pretend fans complain about everything, but it's not true. Fundamental was widely considered a return to form and people seem thrilled with the last few DVDs.

I agree with Patrick here (something which I consider absolutely fabulous, by the way). We - music consumers - do have a right to complain. I'm not even speaking about the PSB fandom here. I'm a consumer of a product. If this product doesn't meet my requirements, I can complain or decide not to buy it.

Being a longtime fan is basically the same as being a loyal customer. You would simply expect a better treatment, that's all. But let's not be too dramatic about Disco 4. You can simply choose not to buy it, or wait until it's on sale.

sadly i will go against the trend slightly, as someone that really liked one and three this one is a bit of a surprise, i like the fact that this has mixes of things they have done with other artists, I also liked the idea of popjustice that they should do a cd full of singles they have done with other artists, this is a good idea though, I just feel that this would be a extra cd, like a bonus cd against some tracks we have not yet heard mixed up. Or maybe get other people to mix there hits ala introspective...but its just my opinion....amazing to see that this topic has fired up so many people....

News article that's slightly critical of the tracklisting!

How can being a fan of an artist come down to "being a loyal customer"? That's crap - we may admire their work but they owe us absolutely nothing. Should I take Disco 2 back to the PSB Superstore because it stinks? Can I get double Tennant Points on my Pet Card for enduring New York City boy? It's (pop)art, darling.

The majors and the artists, in the piracy era, preffer release products only for the bloody and die-hard fan bases of great artists that will but them for sure than launch new artists. To bet on the loyal fans-customers is the safer way to make money for a major and if there is a new contract too (like PSB-EMI) is obviously to receive some releases of this kind.

Because not everyone buys singles (let alone all of them). I, for one, didn't own a single track of Alternative, so it was really well-spent money on that one!

So that's why I wish they would release a follow-up to it; I haven't got every single released after it!

As for Disco 4: I've heard a few of the remixes, but I have no big interest to even hear all of them. It's not a Pet Shop Boys album!

But that means not everyone has the remixes on the singles of the other artists either.

My point was to do with compilations in general - people buy collections of songs for a variety of different reasons, as they will for Disco 4 (or not as the case may be).

It does appear that the biggest gripe in the Pethead world is the fact that a bunch of remixes are being dressed up as an official PSB album, which some may also view as tainting the 'brand'.

I agree with JSP on this one mate. It's not like buying a loaf of bread and finding it's mouldy - so you rightly take it back and complain. Does their role as the "loyal band" mean they can complain about some of the over the top criticism they've had on here this past few days? What do they do if they don't like it - stop releasing anything?

You either like the work of an artiste or you don't - and, as you yourself say, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that really.

As JSP says above, and I think I said in an earlier post, they don't "owe" us anything.

Cheers

I can partly understand the disappointment regarding Disco 4, but partly not. I am always more disappointed when I DON'T get anything. The fact is that we get a lot of releases from PSB. Perhaps not all of them are pleasing, but the more releases there are, the more likely it is that you find something you like a lot.

I just compare this to the situation of some other artists. Years and years may pass without any new releases. It's terrible to know that the artist has made several music videos during the career, but none of them have ever been released on VHS or DVD. That is what disappointment feels like. The feeling you are forever left with nothing new. :?

Id rather they didnt release anything than release Disco 4.

It doesnt really offer anything new, does it?

The only way to vent the anger is not to buy it. You will NEVER own every PSB release anyway.
