'Alternative 2' - the err... alternative to 'Disco 4'?

#1 Post by very2000 »

OK, I know a straightforward B-sides compilation follow-up to 'Alternative' wouldn't provide us with any exclusive material (although sure that could be sorted by a quick rummage through the vaults), but look at what sort of a tasty line-up it would potentially be. :P Surely this would be more worthwhile than the cack served up for 'Disco 412' or whatever it is now...?

‘Alternative 2’

The truck-driver and his mate
Hit and miss
Betrayed
How I learned to hate rock and roll
The calm before the storm
The boy who couldn’t keep his clothes on
Delusions of grandeur
The view from your balcony
Disco potential
Silver age
Screaming
Je t’aime…moi non plus
The ghost of myself
Casting a shadow
Lies

Sail away
Sexy northerner
Always
Break 4 Love
Searching for the face of Jesus
Between two islands
We’re the Pet Shop Boys
Transparent
I didn’t get where I am today
The resurrectionist
Girls don’t cry
Blue on blue
No time for tears (7” mix)
Party song
Bright young things

that's not a very impressive tracklist compare to alternative...

Most of all songs are really b-side for me, and alternative had some of the boys best work...

my only comment is that it is more appealing to me than Disco 4 even though I also have all those tracks. I would spring for that just for the track by track commentary.

I'd buy it. There are some cracking tunes on there - Silver Age, Hit and Miss, Sexy Northener, Truck Driver, Betrayed....

If that was what I read on the OS yesterday I'd be pre-ordering now and raving excitedly about it. :D

Sadly not. :(

It should basically cover all the b-sides that obviously were released on singles after the first "Alternative", that should be another project that could have been released instead of Disco 4.

I'd love to see Alternative 2 released some day. Even though I own all the tracks already, I'm very much an album person these days and rarely dig out the singles, so to have all the post-Alternative B-sides available on a single collection would be great.

Unfortunately, I can't see such a release happening as PSB seem to see the Furthe Listening collections as their alternative to, er, Alternative.

Do what I did: Dig out the CD singles just once, burn them to your PC, then create this compilation all for yourself. Simple!

Yeah, I've been thinking along those lines for a while but now you've said it, you've given me some extra motivation. Thanks!

Trouble is, working from home means I waste enough time away from proper work as it is, so I think I'm going to have to make it a gradual process and do one album's worth of material a day. But actually, I've been meaning to dig out Alternative for ages, too, as I haven't listened to that for yonks. So I'll burn that to my PC first and take it from there. Mind you, sod's law says that no sooner have I completed the task, PSB will immediately announce the official release of Alternative 2.

No, not yet *another* compilation without new tracks, thanks. I own all these songs, I can burn my own compilation if I want to.

If this compilation will be released, I will run to buy at the opening of the shops the release morning. This is a great collection, much better than the first Alternative and impossible to compare to Disco 4 :x
