Best to you Steve, sorry you have to go through this. Wish you a quick recovery, don't hesitate to ask for the painkillers.

Below is a bit of a rant: if I were faced with the surgery Steve has to go thru, i'd be screwed. Feel free to ignore.

(And at least you live in a country where necessary surgery won't bankrupt you if you're insufficiently insured, or uninsured. Britons bitch rightly about National Health's inefficiencies and beauracracies, but here in the US there are beauracracies and innefficiencies even for fully insured people.

And if you can't afford soaring health insurance costs, dictated by for-profit corporations, the answer is: go suffer, go die, you're not profitable for us. You guys in countries where health care is affordable and accessible, seriously thank your lucky stars. In the US, a sudden illness could mean you lose everything and be wrecked financially. A third of Americans are uninsured and vulnerable. And they say the "free market" would bring down costs! A bitter joke, there.)

Sorry for digressing: get well soon Steve.

Petrol at roughly £1.15 per litre. Diesel at roughly £1.25 per litre. Maybe that helps fund our 'free' national health service? ;)

I shudder to think what I must have cost the NHS over the years actually. Must be many tens of thousands of pounds, but hey - that's what taxes are for!

Good luck with the op. At least the footy is on terrestrial t.v. Just hope that all the old people in beds around you with their new hips, also like footy.

Healing white light all around you baby! You'll be good as new in no time. Deschanel is right - don't hestitate to ask for any painrelief, I don't believe in needless suffering. Just answer 'Ten' to any questions involving numbers. Having had ceasareans, I know it's entirely possible not to feel ANY pain if you're being adequately medicated, so don't be shy.

I think we're lucky here in Australia, in that if somebody needs surgery they will get it. A private patient here will receive the same standard of care as a public one, the difference is in the wait time, and in the comfort of hospital room surroundings - not quality of care per se. In NZ things are getting pretty bad. First night is free, additional nights cost you an arm and a leg. Lots of people are sent home before they're ready, which is particularly sucky when it comes to new mothers and the babies they don't yet know how to bathe or care for.. Or old folk who need a hip replacement and have noone to take care of them when they get shunted home.

Don't know why there's not more common sense applied to these funding decisions at budget time. eg, new mother has baby, is home on day two, diagnosis of PND has been missed, basic infant care not taught, poor standard of followup care, = more shaken babies, more kids put into foster care, more drunk mothers, children raised in dysfuntional environments turning to crime, draining the welfar system, having babies of their own, repeating of the whole vicious!! :boo:

Anyway.. good luck with the knee hon. xx

Good luck with your operation, I have had two already with my left arm. So I know how ya feel, any operation is always risky and its not fun at all.

Oh dear.. baddish news!

Unfortunately the op didn't go too well and we have a very sore knee. Recovery period is expected to be double and it's a hideous series of operations involving metal and bits and peices to replace bone tissue. Our poor darling is not too happy at present. :( Wish I could jump on a plane and go over to offer some cheer or slip in some Vodka or something!

I will pass on any well wishes to our brave trouper! It must be a crappy thing to be going through. :(

Oh well.. as my @sshol exhusband used to say..

Could have been worse. Could have been me! ;)

(Just kidding darling.. you know we love you!! )
