The longest day.

#1 Post by gregf »

(Did you know ?)

Yesterday June 21st, is generally regarded as the shortest day, down here in the Southern hemisphere.

As a history buff, i always think in terms of June 22nd being the longest day in the Northern hemisphere.

On that day Napoleon invaded Russia which turned into a disaster and his eventual downfall.
Curiously Hitler who was superstitious, choose the same day to invade Russia, which turned
into a disaster and his eventual downfall.

The movie "The Longest Day" about D-day, has no basis in its name as June 6th is a few weeks
short of the longest day.

Enjoy your summer.
It starts to get lighter for us from now. :D

Thanks lads. We've not had a summer yet, and it's downhill from here!

If you want depressing, you want to try a UK winter. Cold, wet, grey and often freezing. Can't say I've experienced an Australian one, but I suspect it's far preferable to ours!

I'm so happy that I'll be spending this Christmas in Mexico... Shortest day there is comparable to an October day here, and it's a touch warmer, too ;)

Our Winters are a doddle compared to yesteryear. It doesn't even snow anymore.

The Summers are pretty shite though. Today, we have gale force winds in the middle on June. Whats all that about? At least it's warm though.

I would really love to move to miami and be done with winters.

I dont know how it makes sense to live in areas where you purposely suffer thru around 4 months being miserable and depressing out of the year when I could move to an area where you have sun and warm weather just about every month.

but as you know, you get trapped in a job and circumstance before you know it and its just seems too big a risk.

Tell me about it. I went for a run this morning and it felt like I was going backwards at one point.

Played Cricket out here in France this weekend and stayed in a tent saturday night, After a glorious day of sunshine I can honestly say I do not remember a Thunder storm as bright and load as the one in the early hours of sunday morning. It absolutely pissed down for what seemed like hours a blew a gale, almost taking the tent with it.
I didn't realize it was the shortest night but that may well explain why it was so light when I finally managed to get some sleep!
Thankfully the sun came out again in the morning, we turned up to the ground at 1pm to be greeted with a completely dry ground and no sign whatsoever of the night before!
Amazing.
Shame we lost though!

Aye, I'll give you that one Dave. There's been no bad winter here for a few years. Still colder, wetter and greyer than an Aus winter though, I'd be more than willing to bet.

Yeah, today was blue sky, no clouds, light wind and 22°C - bloody terrible if you ask me :D

Seriously, it can get wet and wooly down here but our winter's aren't too bad.

Technically all days last approximately 24 hours. It is the time between sunrise and sunset that varies.

Those who understand need no explanation.
Those that don't understand don't matter.
