I liked their last album X & Y very much, although it was a bit too long and over-produced. The record before was also good. I've listened to Viva La Vida a couple of times now (I haven't bought it), and it doesn't really grab me. The first impression was good but I seem to get tired of it soon.

speaking of which, brings me to bob geldoff ! I was listening to my old mix tapes and came across their old 'I dont like mondays'. considering he never really recorded anything since then and had a rather limited career, was quite needlessly consumed by how did he made money over the years to survive ! Atleast U2 sold zillions and bono can concentrate on his philantrophy

Does bob get some salary from the live aid/8 management fund or does his back catalog still pay for his house and tea ???

Bob Geldoff is/was involved (and I believe an owner) of a very successful media company which has no doubt made him a lot of feckin money

I wasn't expecting this to be so hated here, most outlets have praised the hell out of it, respected critics and intelligent fans alike. I find it to be their best album yet. In fact, their previous albums were quite good but stylistically didn't appeal to me, so this albums (somewhat limited) experimentation was quite welcome and the extreme grandiosity of it works. The final song, Death and All His Friends, is ridiculously good. The only song I'm a bit off is Yes, which sounds like most of their other work.

As far as I'm concerned, U2 don't own overblown rock. Just because the giddy media has made a trillion comparisons between them doesn't mean they overlap. Have you listened to U2's first four albums? Completely different from Coldplay's first four. In fact, early Coldplay sounds like late U2, but only in the sense that they are both operating in the same genre. And their popularity levels are different. U2 started off very small, made a tiny splash with Boy, and made a terrible follow-up. War was somewhat big, and Unforgettable bigger still with Pride. Coldplay started a bit like PSB, with an international mega-hit that put pressure on them to make a decent follow-up. They did, using a more sophisticated sound, and then became bigger than U2 ever was prior to The Joshua Tree with their last two.

The whole 'they're just trying to copy U2' argument from people who feel they should hate Coldplay without knowing why is a bit weak. The biggest four-piece rock band this decade is going to draw comparisons between the last ones as an inevitability. What do you want Coldplay to do? It's not their fault everyone likes them. I'd prefer other acts to be enjoying their success like PSB, Goldfrapp, Moby, or Radiohead, but they are still very good and its nice to see a good band enjoy success for once this decade.

I have to say, until now I have hated Coldplay and all they stand for with every nerve I have in my little self.

And then I heard the title song 'Viva la Vida' when in Canada recently and it somehow just resonated every fibre of my being at that very moment.

It is now one of my fave songs ever. *feels kinda guilty*

I like "Viva La Vida" the single, and a few other Coldplay songs, but really I can't help but ask myself this question: If Coldplay, now FOUR multiplatinum albums in, are supposedly the biggest rock band on the planet, where are their classic singles? At least U2 have "With Or Without You", "Pride" and a few others. But does Coldplay have *any* singles that will remain part of mainstream culture several decades in?

This is not to argue that Coldplay are crap - I don't think they are, but their lack of classic singles is quite startling given their huge popularity.

In my opinion they don't make any impact as a band. I don't know how they sell so good. I don't think they're rubbish, but there's nothing special about them, their songs don't give me any emotions whatsoever...for me it's like looking at a nice shiny smooth book and then when I open it the pages are blank. The only song of theirs I liked a bit was "Clocks" the Buena Vista Social Club version

Blueswan, I don't understand what you mean. Yellow, Clocks and Speed of Sound seem quite classic. And Viva La Vida will probably be the track most people will remember when they think of 2008.
