Laser Eye correction?

Hi! Has anyone on here had this done? What was it like etc....

I was going to get it and I went to the pelimenary eye appointment to make sure I was a good candidate and found out due to my long term contact lense wear I had a condition known as cornea neo vasculization.ie,contacts only let so much air thru the contact lense and they become like suction cups and the blood vessle fill up due to lack of oxygen or somethin.

she said I would have to stop wearing my contacts for around 3 months and the condition would clear up.

I never really got around to it. and anyways my theory is the longer you wait the better the technology gets.I figure by the time I get around to it they will be able to give me new eyeballs.

One of my favorite singers, weird al had one, he went from those huge ugly glasses circa 1990's to reveal a good looking fellow, he had it in 1997. Apperently his vision is better than 20/20 now. Like the sight beyond sight jedi power.

I had this done many years ago before lasers.

It started in the old Soviet Union. There was an accident in a factory and the workers got
small bits of glass in their eyes. Fortunately nearby was a renowned eye surgeon, so
they took the injured people to him. He got the glass out and the ones with Myopia
could now see better.

It was then being done with scalpel in Russia but was unknown in the West as this was
Reagen's time and US doctors did not go to the U.S.S.R. But a few eye surgeons from
other places did go there and learnt how to do it including mine.

I was the ~300th person in Aus to get it and had to sign forms agreeing it was
experimental surgery. Done under local anaesthetic. I remember being in the
operating theatre and doc would say "stare at the light Greg", and the light in
the ceiling would stretch and boing bounce back. That was him doing the cuts
with scalpel. (Love telling that).

I got a good 20+ years of wonderfull vision from it, but loosing it now. No one is
sure why, as my illness is probably a cause rather than the surgery wearing off.
Also recent optometrists gave me distance glasses to read thru and I think that
has made my distance vision deteriorate. Be careful for that.

No regrets.

I always liked the hawaiin shirt curly hair mustache and glasses weird al. he had his own kinda kooky style back then and was easily recognizeable for it.now he looks like any emo rocker.

I had such operation 4 years ago. It was very very painfull in the first weeks.I wasn't able to leave home cause I couldn't see ( that was on the first week) and I couldn't stand light,even the small red light from the tv.But now I can see so clear as never before. It's so worthy.You should choose the doctor very carefully,it's important to be the best even if he's more expensive.

This is very true. My doc (see above) was teaching others in the West, including U.S.,
on how to do it. The sperical maths involved is quite complicated.

One night he was late to the hospital to do our ops. (He would do us all in
one night). He apologised for being late saying he was on the phone to
another doc who didnt understand the match.

"How are they doing the operation if they dont understand the maths" ?

and were so glad to have Dr. F.

I would think these days, the equipment is all computerised and scans and lasers perfectly.
But it goes to show how some docs are much better than others.

Hope in time glennjridge that you will be able to have your eyes done. gregf you are brave having that done!!!

sorry to hear that your distance vision is deteriorating. This is what my Mum is worrying about - ( It's My Mum who wanted to know who has, had it done).

My Mum is looking carefully at the places and Doctors who do the correction. We agree that it is best to choose the best Doctor even though it is expensive.

I have -3 power (MYOPIA) on both eyes for a few years now (I switched from glasses to contacts only a year back !), I went for a lasik consultation sometime back and the surgeon only recommended it for anyone above -6 (which apparently means everything is blurry less than a feet away !!)

Do it. My wife had it a year ago at Vision Express and feels like a new person. It sounds like a lot of money, but it will change your life.

Hi! After all that time my Mum decided to have it done - My Mum went for the tests and found out that she was "only just" over the limit to have them done.

my mate had it done a few years ago in a place on Harley Street (or thereabouts), it was when I lived in London and he was gonna recover round mine for a couple of days. Anyway he had a very bad reaction to do with swelling and was in quite a bit of discomfort, as we left the surgery the assistant cheerfully proclaimed "ooo we hardly ever have a reaction like that, only about one in a hundred" dunno if that was meant to comfort him. As I led him up Regent street unable to see. eyes heavily bandaged, tears running down his cheeks, he was treated to a chorus of Don't Cry For Me Argentina by a passer by, lovely consideration. But don't let this story put you off, other people I've known have had the op. with no problems whatsoever
