Well hooray for Take That! Another question would be, who would never receive this award besides Erasure in your opinion? A lot of bands have been named in this section and in the other Non UK act, and the list is quite vast.

You forgot about Tears For Fears.
They wrote a lot of fantastic songs.
Simple Minds, Frankie Goes To Hollywood... They deserved it.

Are you asking who I think don't deserve to receive the honour, or would be less than overjoyed about having to play the show?Pet Shop Girl wrote:Another question would be, who would never receive this award besides Erasure in your opinion?
For instance, I'm no fan of Pink Floyd but I think they deserve to get it, though I can't seem them reforming for it. They're just so not an awards show act at all, and one of them's just died anyhow.
As I have mentioned here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=19196&p=330001&hilit=moyet#p330001 I am quite certain Erasure won't be honoured unless it's part of a super-deal involving Alison Moyet, Yazoo and probably Depeche Mode as well.
I'm not sure Sam Taylor-Wood will be on many Brits member shortlist. And Marlene Dietrich's not looking too likely either.
Having said that, I would be in favour of opening up the honour to include more acts for whom pop is not their natural home, such as Liza Minnelli, Shirley Bassey, John Barry, a posthumous Sinatra (they can get Frank Jnr and Nancy to do the performing honours!) and maybe even bonkers Babs Streisand, though I do think she's unbelievably over-rated.
George Michael's turned it down, as have the Stones (and I'm sure New Order have been approached too) and I'd say both are more than qualified to be deserving of said doorstopper, but then so did this year's and next year's recipients, Macca and a certain superior synth duo.
Morrissey will never get it because he'd rather eat a burger than turn up at The Brits.
Of course, ABBA won't perform, but maybe, just maybe, if the award is opened up more to non-British Isles acts, the Swedish fab four could actually be in with a chance, as it was in the UK where they first achieved award glory. It would be the 40th anniversary of their Eurovision triumph in 2014. It's really a long shot but if they could persuade Agnetha to travel outside of her homeland, I'm sure the Brits board could honour them, as I'm sure they've sold more records in Britain than any other country. They could get around the performing rule by getting several acts to perform ABBA classics in honour of them, though hopefully Andy Bell will be too busy with the butter that day. Or something.
Personally, I wouldn't let any act who hasn't been around for at least 20 years get the award, but it's not up to me. Oh, and ghastly men who don't sing such as Simon Cowell and Mark Ronson should never ever be entitled to it either. There, that's my two pennies in the thread. Don't go spending them all at once ya here?

Relax, Welcome To The Pleasure Dome, The power of love...
They wrote not so many songs, but they did much more for music than Joe Cocker or Robert Plant...)

Agreed. They are responsible for some awesome tunes but Trevor Horn should get a lot of credit too. You still need to have a longer career than a few years though for such a top award.

and maybe I'm one of the few who absolutily loved their version of do you know the way to san hose, which I'm still amazed not only they covered it but that they did a pretty nice and standard version of it.
power of love is also what one would call an epic sounding song along the lines of fundamental.

I'd agree with you, except how do you explain the Spice Girls standing out like a sore thumb when they were the recipients in 2000 then?Undertaker wrote: You still need to have a longer career than a few years though for such a top award.
PS Those wankers Il Divo have knocked Girls Aloud off from the top spot in the album chart today. Their 'cover' of the Power Of Love must be the most nauseating thing I've heard all year.

I think it was a f*** up. The criticism they got for giving it to the Spice Girls will ensure it doesn't happen again. Wasn't it arond that time they gave the 'best newcomer' to A1? Most comical decision ever.
