Who is the greatest male movie star of all time?

so many wonderful traits and you still wouldn't consider him the greatest male movie star of all time? He is han solo, he is indiana jones, he is jack ryan, he is the president of the usa. Not many actors have portrayed so many iconic figures!!

No, because those very traits define him as someone very far removed from what a star is perceived to be. I bet if he walked past you in your local high street you probably wouldn't even recognise him.

The definition of a true movie star used to be someone like Cary Grant, who was a good actor with charm by the bucketload, fantastic comic timing and improvised repartee, and not to mention Hollywood handsomeness to die for, but who, at the end if the day, you never ever forget that it was Cary Grant on the screen, because he always played versions of the character of Cary Grant he created- the complete opposite of a character actor, in other words.

i think my definition of a male movie star and yours are completely different. I don't think off screen persona has any relevance. What makes him the best male movie star is what he has done on the screen, not off it. And to be as he is off screen is more endearing than someone who lives there life as if constantly on film.

Im not solely interested in acting as I have previously mentioned the iconic characters played by Ford and their impact on the world. There's no way i'd expect Ford to be oscar nominated every year. You seem to be suggesting that a movie star is greater if they are more in the limelight. I'm suggesting that Ford's exclusivity and traits previously mentioned make him far more synonimous with what is great.

I think one of the movies you are reffering to was sleepers where he played a sadistic guard at a school for juvenile delinquents. great movie.

havent seen the other one yet."the woodsman" I believe.

but he's been in couple of movies I love such as wildthings and a few good men......not so much footloose.
