If you think albums like Fundamental, Release, and Nightlife are good albums that have warranted further investment in the band in *any* promotional/production arena, then you and I may as well be speaking two different tongues.
Release was mostly produced by PSB themselves. Obviously not a lot of funds available on the back of the average Nightlife. As for Fundamental ;- It was a fantastic album that was brilliantly produced. Obviously sold well enough for them to get the backing to work with Xenomania (PopArt had already sold 1 million worldwide as well, prior to Fundamental)
Didn't Release do less well than Nightlife?
Why is it then that they could produce Fundamental so brilliantly as you claim? Doesn't really make sense going by your logic.

Because it was on the back of PopArt, which sold 1 million worldwide. Don't you read anything? I get the impression you are getting into a sweat and typing your reply before you have read whats been posted.

Firstly, if you think the dire, uninspired bore that Fundamental was is a "fantastic album that was brilliantly produced," then I am seeing the root of our issues.

Secondly, you're going to have to let go of the inaccuracy of your belief that simply selling well (and not really that well at all when it comes to bigger industry acts) will get you some banked future musical production assets - THIS IS NOT HOW LABELS WORK.

Not the most bizarre thing you have ever written but it's in the top 3.

First of all, don't shout. You are coming across as angry again.

So you still think that record companies don't set budgets on the performance of previous albums' sales. Afterall, you know because you work with labels every day. Could you tell me one thing? Why do record companies drop artists?

That was actually not a shout (as I don't shout). It was the equivalent of holding up an educational sign and putting a flashing marquee around it. The only one coming across as desperately angry is you, in your many different incarnations on many other fora trying to stick it to a band you have so "written off."

Re-read my post. It's full of great, revelatory information for you.

If you are alluding to Erasure selling so few copies that they risk getting dropped, then I would have a rethink if I were you. So now you tell me that Erasure haven't "earned" a good producer, or a good studio, but they will get dropped simply because they, what? Don't make enough money to warrant the printing of a CD sleeve and get distribution? Bravo. According to your self-scribbled brochure, if Erasure don't make money, they won't have money spent on them. You tell me, then, why *do* bands get dropped?

Listen. I'm actually not trying to have a go at you, because what you surmised earlier is a common misconception with a lot of people who don't work in that industry. I'm just telling you that you're sprinting full force down a very dark maze with a brick wall ending.

Undertaker, quite simply you don't like Erasure, you don't need to make out you buy all their albums as an excuse to have the right to slaughter them and to be honest if you do continue to buy or download or whatever and continue to listen to their music then it is a little strange isn't it?
And as for the rubbish about money to produce an album, well I'm not having it, you are just making things up as you go there and don't you know it.
Wouldn't it make more business sense for a label to think, "oh the last album didn't do as well as we wanted, maybe we should invest more money in it this time to try and sell more" or would that make too much sense to you.
Quiet why a label would give an artist less money to produce another album after a flop would not really make sense would it?
I hate to think how much Battleship Potemkin must have cost but they still made Fundamental. Or I suppose BP doesn't count for you as a "proper" psb release.
And as for 1 million sales of popart, well I would doubt that very much as I remember it not charting well anywhere in the world when it was released. It didn't seem to stay in many chart's for long either. Certainly not enough to justify the huge budget that Fundamental apparently cost.

Well, it charted at #2 in Norway, but that's by the bye. You don't need to chart particularly highly to shift a lot of units. Chart positions are something of a red herring in these discussions. PopArt only hit #30 on original release, but was certified Gold in the UK (100,000 sales) in its first week. Alternative got to #2 but has only managed a Silver award (60,000 sales) thus far. PopArt didn't come close to charting in the USA, but it's sold 100,000 copies there.

So what it has been is a consistent seller, and I can well believe it's sold in excess of 1 million copies around the world.

I really don't understand you Undertaker. You don't like Erasure since the Chorus days or so, you slag off everything post that era ( or whenever you think they were any good at all) but you do still bother to check out their further output, you're well informed about the band, you visit the Erasure forum frequently & are up to date everything related etc. Is it some kind of S/M thing? To put yourself freely through so much unpleasant experiences? What is your purpose in your constant teaching the Erasure fans how shit Erasure are? I'll say you beat the air then  . There're many groups I don't like or I feel became worse than before but I'd never bother waste my time on them like you do on Erasure. You see, it's not a problem that you don't like Erasure, but your constant bitching appears rather empty and stupid when your opinions are based only on chartplaces, sales figures and your own taste.
Go fast!

Full of paranoia. I know full well Erasure wont get dropped. You are doing what Douves does and are plucking out statements that aren't there.

Thanks for not answering my question. By not answering it, it says hell of a lot  Well done. Seen as you couldn't answer it and have asked me to answer it for you, thats not a problem, as it's pretty easy to do so.

i'd say artists get dropped due to previous poor sales. You have argued on and on that labels do not base previous performances of albums, on any furture decision. God help any business you are in charge of.

''Hi Kylie, i'm Stephano. I'm in charge of you now. I see your last album sold millions. Doesn't matter though, you are out. As for you John Kettley, your weatherman song was absolute shite but f*** it, here is a 3 million pound record deal. Well done sir.''

I think this discussion is over :D

Well Danny C has just about wiped the floor with you, but i'll take care of the little bits left.

I do like Erasure's past stuff. I've been to see them 4 times and most of those were great shows. Hey, i even own 6 albums .

However, i've made no secret of the fact that i think their output over the last 15 years has been poor. Abba was an embarressing start. 'Always' was back on track and after that, a fast ride down the dumper. Just because i liked their stuff pre Abbaesque, doesn't mean i have to follow like a sheep. If something is poor, i'll say so. Making video's while sitting on the bog, having a crap, isn't what i see as entertainment. Nor is the 5 or 6 releases previous. Fair enough, some people do like their output post 92 but that doesn't mean the people that dont, shouldn't give their opinion.

What else did you write? Oh yeah, Potemkin . I do believe that was a Tennant/Lowe release and not credited as Pet Shop Boys. Do your homework before you comment :shhh:
