I've played all of the Silent Hill series, Clock Tower 3 etc but they're not very frightening, more like creepy imo. Last night I decided to give Project Zero (in North America it was released under the name "Fatal Frame") a try, and let me tell you, after an hour or so I had to stop playing and get up to turn on the lights in every room
a quick rundown - you're in this old house in the Japanese countryside, where your brother and bunch of other people have gone missing, the only thing you're equipped with is a camera. which imo is one of the greatest things with this game, you feel very unprotected, to say the least.
What platform is that Released on? Sounds interesting.
Resident Evil was/is the scariest i've played. The reason being it was the 1st of its kind. Good graphics and you just didn't expect or know what was going to happen next.
Thief 2 is excellent when played over 4 speakers or more... In a dark room. Sometimes you actually have the idea that the guards are indeed walking behind your back!
Black Dahlia is a very old game (1998), an 8 CD Adventure. It is a very disturbing storyline, what makes it rather creepy.
And the one thing I still have troubles with myself, the 1st game I ever played on my own pc was Tomb Raider, and in there you have, near the end, those mummies making a rather annoying sound. That still gives me the creeps...
I've just watched the gameplay movie of Project Zero... That was brilliant!! How is the replay value of those types of games actually... because they are intended to scare you, but does it happen at random, or does it happen at the same place every time?
Maybe not the scariest game, but the most atmospheric and gut wrenching terror filled game I've played recently, was Call Of Duty on the PC. The nearest you will get to recreating WW2 in a game.
Graphics are some of the best seen on a FPS game, and the missions you have to do are really quite moving and poignant.
Probably an old game called 'Dreamweb' on the Amiga (it was on PC too). It was probably 9 or 10 years ago now, and would appear a little primitive by todays standards, but the whole atmosphere was just so chilling.
Anyone remember that one?
The original Quake and expansion packs were a bit spooky too. The ghostly swords coming toward you in one of the expansion packs (can't remember which) made me nearly crap myself the first time I saw them!
why they havent made resident evil in a first person mode is beyond me. they go to lengths to create a immersive creepy atmosphere and world, then leave out the one view that makes you feel you are actually in that world. I hate 3rd person. thats what runied vice city for me.
but as far as scary, I will never forget the first time I played doom when I was a teenager late at night.the flashign lights in the corridors, the shapes of creatures milling about waaaaay in the distance, the surreal look and feel to the levels with a mishmashing of a space station with hell and that dreary techno background music all added to a very scary game for me.
havent been able to duplicate that exprience yet, well maybe some parts of halflife or system shock2
hide n seek, when I was 12 with my building friends during the summer holidays at 10.30pm....we had a huge compound, with trees, loads of hiding places and creepy crawlies everywhere...
