Oh, I think people in service industries can't be expected to decipher the wishes of foreign nationals who have absolutely no English. I wouldn't expect that of anybody - and if this guy ran a shop of his own and decided that it was too much trouble then I don't think anybody could deny him that right. He could choose who he did business with.

However, what I find fishy about this guy is that he seems to be an employee who has for some reason attracted the attention of the BBC. It's as if he's unilaterally taken this course of action and made some great play of it. He might fancy himself as a hero of Middle England, but many in Middle England wouldn't see the difference between the immigrants he refers to and himself...

I never knew you swung both ways, Glenn. Those a-la-carte Republicans, eh?

The way I understand it is that sub post offices are run as franchises and hence are a bit of both. They are privately owned and often have a part which is like a newsagents or stationers with its own tills and such, and then a seperate counter that deals with the post office duties. I assume that post office counters would have the right to revoke his franchises but they don't employ him as such.

Whilst it is true to say that many immigrants cannot speak English it is also true that many want to learn English but are prevented from doing so because of the MASSIVE cut in ESOL spending by the government in recent years

That's a fair enough point, but I personally wouldn't move to, let's say France, without knowing the French language well enough to at the very least be able to get by first. Again, a common sense thing.

Yeah but that's you Steve. The iberian penninsula is full of British and Irish people who can't speak a word of Spanish or Portuguese ditto with Italy and probably Romania and Bulgaria as well.

The difference is that it would be by choice that you would be moving to France. A lot of these immigrants have nothing and want a better life. Learning the lingo will be the last thing on their minds until they get here. Even then, i highly doubt they have ever been given an education, let alone, an English lesson.

That said, a lot of them are here on the scrounge and a lot illegally. There was a good documentary on t.v this week about how they get in. They are that desperate, they cling to moving lorries and are hanging on underneath.

There are that many wanting to get into Britain, how can you tell who are genuine and who aren't?
