Re: Political correctness vs. common sense.
I'm not talking about denying anyone anything or deporting.
I'm complaining. about a situation.
as far as taxes, well thats just swell, but because of their low incomes because they come here unskilled and work at chillis.....immigrants cant pay anywhere near enough in taxes to cover their usages of services their many children get free.
education.... health insurance ....medical care. got to be upwards of 5 billion a year maybe even more.
calling illegal immigrants "powerless" is you inserting your personal idiosyncracys into this discussion. millions stream in....having kids which are then educated and get medical for free.powerless is a heartstring tugging way to describe them,I'll give you that.its certainly not a good choice to describe illegal immigrants.
its great people like you and patrick have a heart, but none the less, its an internet heart and as such can totally be discarded.people like you dont run companys because allowing money to continually hemorrage is a long term disaster.

Re: Political correctness vs. common sense.
When I was working in my final IT job I was in an aisle of 8 desks.
There was me a Sydney boy, my friend (who I think was gay:I didnt care),
a Filipino, an Iraqi, an Iranian (who loved to go to bars), another good friend
who was Indonesian, another Filipino, and just to mix it up a bit, a Queenslander*.
We all got on great. The Iraqi and Iranian used to swap stories about the war.
Very proud of my country and its tolerance.
(Queensland is the "deep north" Anglo-Saxon part of Australia).

1. I work in Healthcare, and everything we do has to be translated into Spanish (and Korean etc etc..). There are even people out there trying to force Spanish to be taught in schools to us "non-olive skinned" people...Palpatine wrote:So because a few lines from a poem written over a hundred years ago appear on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty, the United States government has an obligation to let anybody from anywhere, and in as many numbers as possible, settle in their country? Why not just give California back to Mexico?patrick wrote:Can you define "bending over backwards" here? Because I live in Southern California and yes, people without my skin color are everywhere, but no, I've never once run into an untranslatable situation. And even if I had ... so what?df118junkie wrote:I agree. It's the same here in California - bending over backwards to accomodate Spanish speaking immigrants (mostly illegal at first)...
There's a little plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. It's time to shit or get off the pot.
2. "It's time to shit or get off the pot" is on the bottom of the Statue Of Liberty ???!!!!! - foreign graffiti surely !
3. If we give California back to Mexico, they'll turn it into the shithole that their country is...
I came to the US and had to "do as the Romans do" or I would have been put on a plane out of here...
They aren't even thrown back on the truck they came over the border in... they're given money and allowed to breed !!!
(don't even get me started on the Catholic drive to populate the world....)

As far as I'm concerned anyone who dismisses Mexico (or any country) as a shithole is instantly excluded from the list of people whose opinions I can take seriously.

This is drifting way from my original point of 'speak English in England if you want to be served by people who speak English in England'. Please, let's not turn this into a cheap shot political argument on immigrants and personal takes on individual countries.

Many Native American tribes are Asiatic in origin......

Re: Political correctness vs. common sense.
Indeed. It is thought that the majority of Native Americans are descended from Asiatic peoples who crossed the Bering strait when it was a land bridge. One of my wife's uncles looks positively Japanese. The thing you have to remember about Mexico is that unlike the US there was a large indiginous population there before Europeans arrived. There were cities with organised (very brutal) religions, aquaducts and other technologies. This means that the population of modern Mexico has a far higher concentration of Native American blood than that of the US.
Once in Mexico City I got my hair cut by a guy who was actually of Chinese origin, and it never occurred to me that he might be before he told me himself. Anyway, Mexico is a country with many problems, and much poverty, but it is very far from being a "shithole." It is large and both geographically and culturally varied just as the US is, and I for one love to visit it. Sam and I may very well go to live there some day.

Re: Political correctness vs. common sense.
Regarding political correctness, it can't be long before one of these Islamic cells pulls off a major atrocity because of this country's ridiculous immigration open door policy. I was just listening to the radio and some student representative was saying all the usual PC crap about how you can't stigmatise certain people.
Jesus, students who've come from the Afghan border are slightly more likely to be suicide bombers than those from Iceland. Or is it all a double bluff?

Many of my students are Arab Muslims. There are many Home Office checks already in place regarding students visas, although the system would appear to still be open to abuse, given recent events in the northwest of England. My school has to report any students who are absent for more than two weeks to the Home Office. If students attend less than 80% of classes, their visas are not renewed and any current student visa can also be cancelled.
One of my Saudi students was recently burgled and when he reported the crime to the police they were all over him. He said if he were ever the victim of crime in the UK again he wouldn't bother reporting it.
There has to be a balance. We can't demonise millions of people because of the actions of a few.

That's a disgrace. As you say, there has to be a balance and the Police should be treating everyone equally. But that never happens with the Police, which is why an innocent man is dead and the officer who pushed him will get a slap on the wrists - just like the deMenezes clowns. If it had been a civilian who had pushed him, he'd be looking at a manslaughter charge.Dipso wrote:One of my Saudi students was recently burgled and when he reported the crime to the police they were all over him. Re: Political correctness vs. common sense.
Pakistan is a failed state. Whilst it's sad to have to demonise innocent people, this country has to protect its own people too. The fact that eleven nutters got permission to come and study suicide-bombing here is incredibly disturbing. I know that universities are cash-strapped, but really.....Dipso wrote:Many of my students are Arab Muslims.
