A study has found that only 53% of those with osteosarcoma were alive five years after diagnosis - a figure that has not changed since 1981.
I didn't know before. That is the cancer I had, and apart from being told there's only 200-ish cases a year in this country, they certainly didn't tell me details like that. I suppose being told you were 47% not likely to make 5 years wouldn't really be very helpful at the time. It's funny though, the things you learn afterwards. It seems I was one of the lucky 53% !
I remember looking in some medical book at the top ten treatables and Osteosarcoma wasn't amongst them. Sad to say I was resigned to 'game over' thoughts at the time. Glad to be able to say that pushing 13 years later there is next to zero chance of the cancer returning, the only problems I am having at the mo are related to what they had to do to cure me, not the cancer itself!
