Madonna "Celebration" Greatest Hits

A greatest hits of Madonna is always going to be a problem as there were single issued in some countries and not others. I'm not sure if Dress You Up (one of my all-time favourite Madonna songs) or Hanky Panky were issued as singles in the US for instance. Likewise Keep It Together wasn't issued over here in the UK.

If the track list above is correct then I'm moderately happy with that, but there are nearly 70 UK singles to choose from in the UK alone so it's not an enviable task.

"Dress You Up" was a hit and that you sometimes hear on eighties stations (or flashback weekends). "Keep it Together" and "Hanky Panky" were both Top ten hits (but probably not for long) despite not having videos (perhaps because of the power of her popularity at the time with "Blonde Ambition" and all). "Dear Jessie", for instance, was not a single here but I believe was elsewhere. The video leaked years later as a rarity on MTV and/or Vh1.

You're right. Hanky Panky and Dress You Up were US hits. It was Gambler that wasn't released over there. Dear Jessie was a top 5 in the UK whilst the US released Oh Father (released in the UK a few years later).


The bit I've heard of Celebration sounds great. Very Vogue/Deeper and Deeper.

You're right. Hanky Panky and Dress You Up were US hits. It was Gambler that wasn't released over there. Dear Jessie was a top 5 in the UK whilst the US released Oh Father (released in the UK a few years later).


The bit I've heard of Celebration sounds great. Very Vogue/Deeper and Deeper.

"Gambler" wasn't a single but it did have a video (MTV used to release a lot of videos for non singles back in the day). It could have been but I think there was an issue with "Vision Quest" being a Geffen album plus she already had so much single material to choose from on "Lik e A Virgin". Something that really surprised me is that "Into The Groove" wasn't actually a single but a b-side to "Angel" (which helped it get into the Top Five). Of course, "Into the Groove" is probably still the song that gets played the most on radio (and you'll sometimes here "Angel" here and there).

"Celebration" has leaked. People are saying it's a poorer version of "Get Together". I like it. It's a bit of all her old dance songs, even if the music is a bit dated (and not in that charming "It's sounds like her eighties stuff" way).

I don't mind Madonna revisiting her 90's sound with Celebration - it's supposed to be a 'look back' type of song anyway I think. I actually thought it was going to be just a radical remix of Holiday (with the emphasis on "Holiday CELEBRATION/Come together in every nation") like Duran Duran's Burning The Ground was a radical remix of Hungry Like The Wolf, so I'm pleased it's a new song.

Ive been hearing it for a bit now and i'll give it a 7/10..its decent but surprisingly under par (considering its madonna)

The intro and general melody sounds like that massive 90s smash Encore Une fois. The lyrics are typically 'come on and have fun' fodder. The spoken voice and laff sound a bit naff (i kept thinking macarena for some wierd reason). But overall its an effortlessly produced dance track with a singalong chorus, which is bound to be another big Euro #1 for sure, Ive no idea if US radio have started playing more dance ??

I'm looking fwd to buying the album for sure, her singles catalog is peerless

I'd be really shocked it the song does anything on US radio because dance rarely hits now of days (plus she is an older artist...I think the only reason "4 Minutes" did so well is because some places called it a Justin Timberlake track). It will definately be yet another number one dance track but that's about it. I really like the song although I'm sure it will not be all time favorite and especially the spoken word part (which mostly reminds me of "Into The Groove").

It's all right. Musically, the hook really does emulate "Blue Monday", just in terms of the notes.

"Do you want/to go higher/get closer to the fire"- that bridge emulates the fabulous SOS Band's "Baby We Can Do It (Take the Time , Do It Right) song..

I think it's fine. But I miss old Madonna. These days she's writing articles for Israeli newspapers about her boring "spiritual journey' with Kabbalah. She's so preachy and uptight, like it's her job to enlighten us fools. Ugh, save it sister. Kaballah is mysticism for bored Jewish housewives, as Howard Stern once said. It's a bit of a cult and commercial enterprise thanks to her, and it's just so boring.

Blondie set a path, Madonna ripped a superhighway. She wasn't alone, she took a lot from the British pop stars at the time, and seized MTV to her advantage at a crucial point. But she elevated pop music and its aesthetics , redefined real stardom through smarts, taste, and sheer willpower. Feminism, fashion, photography, fame- she touched all of those , and influenced it. She had help- she was smart in choosing her allies- but when you see a Hollywood starlet on a red carpet evoking "Old Hollywood glamour", she was there first.
OH I do go on.. she annoys me now, but I'll always love her.
