the best music artists from each decade. Mmm, lets say top 3 or whatever you want from each one, starting from the 60's. And if you need rules, lets say the artist is associated with the decade they became big, like U2 technically started in the 70's, but they truly came from the 80's.

And this is the best artists to come from a decade, so work after their big period counts as well. Mine are

60's - The Beatles, Roy Orbison.

70's - Bowie, Pink Floyd, Queen.

80's - PSB, U2, New Order.

90's - Radiohead, Moby, Tool.

00's - Coldplay, Goldfrapp, Arcade Fire.

OK, the thing with NERD is, people know the first album, and the first album is very very mediocre, if even that. It's the later two albums that draw me in.

Caviar's Thin Mercury Sound is one of those great lost albums.

The Spymob album, there is only one, is peerless.

I think Virgin Boy epitomizes the 00's utter banality, not the 10's (unless it gets worse, which I suppose it has every possibility to do so). Surprising he wasn't ruling the charts.

You know, I think the best music ever made came from the 00's, and yet the most popular stuff was among the worst ever. A small minority of people are getting smarter, and the masses are getting stupider.

I don't buy into that philosophy.

Yes, Being Boring is a mature song, and Boom Boom Pow is libertinage. But there is not progress in the world. Often the ability to appreciate Being Boring takes away your ability to appreciate the innocent pleasures. And I most certainly don't understand what logic and reason have to do with music appreciation. You enjoy more recent PSB, some enjoy mainly 80s PSB and by the time Streets came out they left them for good.

Reason and logic are good tools, but they are not all in this world. They won't help you really understand the world.

People listen to music in many different ways. Perhaps Neil Tennant like Boom Boom Pow? HE is known for liking the throwawayness of pop which then returns in later years to represent a time period, much as West End Girls does in the states. That song very much works in that format. I hate the song personally, but only because it sounds like a vacuum is running. But my brother, who likes more obscure ambient and experimental music than myself likes that song. So who's to really say? Perhaps Bach is better than all of this music we have now? Some would make that claim based on "reason".

I'd have to have a think about the last decade. Obviously i'd have PSB in the 90's and 00's but pointless doing that.

What do you mean there is not progress? I don't see the connection between the two statements.

I'm not up for another philosophical discussion, but this is simple anyways: you don't see how logic and reason apply to music? Well tell me, which is a better indicator of a healthy society: Being Boring being number 1, or Boom Boom Pow or take your pick shit song being number 1? The fact that libertinage is grossly overlistened to while mature songs are relatively unknown tells me a lot about the intelligence of society. Look at what people listen to and watch! Who's the Boss? Survivor? Transformers? I know I'm cherry picking but these are the rule rather than the exception. For every Sopranos, Pet Shop Boys and Citizen Kane there's 15 pieces of crap which are hugely popular.

I know this sounds elitist, but people are too politically correct to be truthful. Have you noticed the rising prevalence of euphemisms? So I'm sorry, most people are stupid. I used to be myself. I liked Will Smith and Limp Bizkit and whatever, then when I started to think for myself I discovered PSB. The world of entertainment is a great litmus test for gauging intelligence levels.

As an aside, I think classical music has an air of mindlessness about it. Bach and Mozart seem to exhude this feeling; the songs don't seem to go anywhere. But how could they? Progress is inherent in humans, and it would be insane to think musicians today aren't standing on and building on the shoulders of giants. Mozart is just as important to the music we hear today as The Beatles. So what we hear with Goldfrapp, Moby and PSB is modern; chord structures and sequencing Mozart never imagined, because the world and age we live in influence everything, like artists. If technology and thought has improved, the arts have as well.

There is no progress in the world.

When you gain something, you lose something else. With maturity you lose the funloving side, with the funloving side, you lose maturity. Neither is better than the other, that's a value call. Luckily for us, PSB embrace both sides from Being Boring to New York city boy.

There is no such thing as intelligence. You most likely speak of awareness.

Well, that would be the opposite of my feelings. Not only can you not really make this claim, but progress is only what you define it as. When you get TV in the home, you lose story time with family, et al. Pop music is not progress from classical. For you technology has improved, thus things are better. Yet take the email. It seems to have destroyed letter writing.

If you aren't up for a philosophical discussion I submit that you stay very far away from me and don't ask me any more questions, as you are begging many questions with your comments.

But you are young yet (as am I). I think the key might be a bit more humility. It's not like you have it all figured out. Which society is better, the one with Being Boring at number 1 or Tik Tok? Ask different people and you will get different opinions. Just because you say those who like Tik Tok are the stupids doesn't make them so.

My relativism is obviously no fun for you, and it's frustrating when people don't agree with your opinions. So, if you believe in what you believe, got out and try to apply it to the world. Become a hero or a hero-saint, or ubermench, or over-soul or whatnot. Basically, self actualize yourself. Bring your thoughts into action. When you do this, you will see if your believes gel with the real world. If they happen to, you may be a much more satisfied person.
