02's 3G network is a bit patchy but there's pretty much always enough coverage from their legacy networks to chat on the phone. Of course now they are no longer the only network to carry the iPhone in the UK, but I assume it's similar on Orange and Vodafone. I often hear people on US based tech podcasts/websites complaining about AT&T. It seems odd the Apple would drop the ball on this so badly when everything else they do seems to be focused on "customer experience" above all else (like customisability.)

I am with Telstra in Oz, kind of like AT&T.
They put their monopoly profits into a great mobile network and the reception is great with never a dropout.

The US has/had a hodgepodge of networks and protocols thanks to good old
competition. The result is many bands are
poorly serviced. So Deschanel I am sure
There is nothing wrong with any of your
iPhones. It is purely a network issue.

The one exception is if your iPhone is on
OS 3.1 which had a horendous bug in it
known as the coma bug. If you are on 3.1,
then update the OS.

I have been using an app for a while that allows reading of our forum :

They have now added pagination*, so I feel I can recommend it.

*It has been working well for some time. The only limitation was that if
you had a lonnng thread, you had to scroll all the way through to see
the last post. They have now added pagination, so you can quickly jump
to any page. See the slide bar and arrows above.

Cost is AU$2.49 which make it about US$2 or £1.

There does need to be a server side script installed and we have it
running here in the PSB forum.

Well iPhone OS now called iOS 4 was released on Jun 21/22, solstice day.

Folks with an iPhone 3G model may want to hesitate to upgrade as
I have heard a few case of the phone running very slowly.

I have bought an iPad and am really pleased with it. Surfing the web and
having many web pages open is a joy as wifi speed is good, probably faster
CPU helped.

You need much less apps with the iPad as you can do most things native
in a browser web page.

Anyone else with an iPad ?

Yes, I heard of that symptom too.

There may be a 4.0.1 update with some bug fixes ; I may wait for that.
Remember how bad 3.1 was with the "coma" bug, then 3.1.2 arrived,
with no apologies or recognition from Apple.

I am no Apple yes man and I can say I think this problem with buggy
releases and no recognition is Apples biggest problem. It is why the
serious business people don't use Apple.

Dunno if i updated the news here.. but i'm on a 3GS

Woo hoo!! Nothing great comparedto the 2G, but it is damn fast

Plus theres no 3G in India yet (not all over the country anyway) so no use of the3G services

and i've jailbroken my iP so im not upgrading to iOS yet..

I changed the thread title to show that
anyone with any type of of phone or net client is welcome here.

My prediction is we are slowly entering a new stage in computing :

1. Appliance style thin clients that access the net will replace PCs.

2. "Apps", the software for these thin clients will replace packaged PC software.

3. Cloud computing, storing our data on the net will replace storing it on a PC.

So I would like to hear from folks using the other brand phones.
I think Android OS shows promise. How do people find it ?

What apps are people using. Docs To Go looks promising but I have read it's word
processing is limited. http://www.dataviz.com/ Is anyone using any similar app ?

I am using Google Docs to store files (other than music) online. Google Docs now
allows any type of file up to 1 gigabyte in size. Any Google Docs users ?
Anyone using other competing cloud services ?

The iPad is a joy to use. Anyone else with an iPad yet or waiting for similar offerings
from other vendors ?

I am still using Nuevasync as my synchronisation service http://www.Nuevasync.com
Any other people using a sync service ?

I agree with you there but sadly probably for the wrong reasons ....

We are entering an age of dumbing down and new technology for the sake of it, regardless of whether it's any good or not, or even if it's actually useful or better than the old stuff.

Digital TV .... Much improving all the time, but really should have had better infrastructure from the start and not sold off the bandwidth and frequencies to the mobile phone companies so quickly .... ( If this hadn't been done, Freeview in the UK would have had enough room for nearly 3 times as many stations and HD would have started nearly 2 years earlier ....

The new iPhone does more than just video calls. It has HD video recording/ 5 megapixel camera. It has double the amount of RAM (compared to 3GS), meaning that it will run much more fluid with the help of the better processor installed(A4 chip). It also has a retina display which is a gorgeous feature, the display has increased pixels making the pictures and text very clear/precise. I upgraded from 3G to iPhone 4 so there is a noticeable difference for me in speed and usability.

The iPad is very wishy washy. I may buy the next generation version (which hopefully will include retina display, better processor etc)

Don't you find it slightly amusing that the "new" features are actually things that could have been instigated on possibly the second or even first iteration of the iphone ?
Practically everything that is new (better resolution camera, screen, memory etc ... ) could easily have been on the last few generations of it ?

(5 meg pixel cameras were out over seven years ago .... 512mb of RAM ?!? My ancient USB pendrive has that !!?! I recently bought a 16gig micro SD card for £8 retail, the technology is there, but Apple buyers will have to wait for iphone #7 for something like that .....)

As I mentioned above, it really seems like it's beads to the natives, "give the punters a few more shiny gizmos to play with and they'll lap it up ..."
Of course, that's generally how business's work, but really Apple are taking the piss .......

As we've seen on the news today, Mssr Jobbs has admitted what a c*** up was made on the most basic aspect of the phone, i.e to make it actually function properly as a phone, you need to use a rubber band around the casing to hold the signal .....

I'm not an Apple basher exclusively, but the sooner people realise that they're being shafted by pretty much all technological companies, the sooner we'll all demand and expect cutting edge stuff immediately after discovery, and not 3 years down the line when we are being milked dry for feeble updates.
