I was quoting Laing's theory of how schizoid behavior, and disassociation from the "objective" world begins with an existential split between a "self" and those things you mentioned: persona, masks, etc, that the "self" no longer feels to be themselves. I don't wholely subscribe to the view at all. I feel Laing had some valuable concepts, and actually went a long way to describing social anxiety without explicitly saying so. The concept of ontological insecurity being one of his best. But the existential bias went a bit too far. With severe mental illness (cataonia, grossly nonsensical speech) I find it hard to believe there is not more of an organic basis, whereas I would buy that much of depression and anxiety is existential. My main point was just that psychosis is a real thing (which I guess is obvious).raggatwin wrote:York Minster wrote:Outside my long held belief that there are no "personality types" or "disorders" (that's not to say that the "self" can't set up a "false-self" system that eventually leads into psychosis) just skimming the questions in this, my frustration factor is too high to even take it. The first question is worded very poorly, so that some people would check "no" when they mean "yes". As far as things like trusting reason over emotions, I can't give you a black and white yes or no on that. But as for #65 You are always looking for opportunities - yes, I'm always looking for the CD with the song to put on my stereo.
There are no 'false selfs' merely contextual selfs.....persona, masks, performance, dramaturgy.

of course, there is a biological basis for much mental ilness, i was merely paying with you and social constructionism.
Laing himself was a complete nutcase apparently, I think his son wrote a book about him......

saying that...anti psychiatrist Thomas Szaz said that when started practicing there were 5 types of mental ilness and when he finished there were over 90.
I can't remember the name of the journal created to list the symptoms of all of them, there is a different one for the EU.
