Whilst I agree that the use of chemical weapons is deplorable and it's unimaginably awful for the people hit, I agree with the vote. I think we've learnt by now that getting involved in conflicts in the Middle East is not a good idea in terms of cost in lives, money and huge knock on consequences, in a battle that can never be won.

The international order of realpolitik can be a quite hard to digest sometimes. It has very little to do with what is morally right or wrong. It is all about power nothing else...

I wouldn't necessarily blame Britain for this mess, NATO is the biggest problem, sorry but with countries such as Russia and China having a big say in things when they themselves have absolutely terrible human rights records it is no surprise that they don't give a damn about such matters. And aren't Russia selling weapons to Syria? Absolutely scandalous that nothing is being done once again because of these countries. Scarey too that Britain is now too much of a coward to help out when children are being massacred like that.
Dictators have nothing to fear these days, especially if they strike up deals with Russia and China. A sad sad world we live in today.

I wouldn't blame Britain either. 58% of Americans are against US military action in Syria, not that that ever meant a damn, popular opinion.

Chemical weapons were outlawed as a horror, something that crossed the line of "civilized" war a century ago in WW I. If Britain and France aren't with us.. forget it. We can't be the policemen of the world. At the time though, of WWI, chemical weapons were an especial horror. They were new, and their power and viciousness against victims was something unseen before. Truly dreadful. Inhumane. But all war is inhumane, isn't it?

We in the US ,even though it was before our time, have to take responsibility for the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The use of napalm and phosphorous and Agent Orange in Vietnam. Not to mention the disasters of war since, Iraq and Afghanistan. Such folly.

Honest question: Germany seems the richest country in Europe, the cornerstone of the EU. We never ever consult them on war though, do we?
I understand deeply how much Germany de-militarized itself and renounced war forever, at least in the West. It is an awesome and good thing, history considered. But, who paid for West Germany's safety and acted as a bulwark against the USSR to the East? Us Yanks mostly, with our bases, for decades, still now. I'm not complaining, I'm just observing. Germany's so rich now, not paying for defense for decades. They're doing well, for reasons beyond defense, i didn't mean to make it sound that it's just that. While those of us in the UK/US are all feeling broke as f***, money's tight, times are hard. Germany lending a hand never ever comes up when it comes to war decisions. Just wondering.

I hope Obama does not strike Syria, because it will accomplish nothing. The use of chemical weapons is a horror, but maybe our use of drones is too. I don't know. The entire Middle East seems like a boiling cauldron right now, and I don't know what we can do. I wish we could accept there's nothing we can do.

Are they not? Then why do I keep hearing about how they veto their votes all the time? Must be some other weak organisation then?
