Perhaps that was an overstatement, but not "very wrong". I never said that Depeche mode WERE an industrial band, but they do come close at times.

The dark edge to their electronica post Vince Clarke has been a big influence on many industrial bands. That much is certain, and that's why it's no big surprise to see Manson covering one of their songs. This was my original point.

Alright. But don't call them "fathers of", please. And you must be right, the guy loves Depeche Mode. Who wouldn't? Sometimes the number of people loving Depeche Mode just exhausts me.

So, ANYONE covering another Depeche Mode song = what an incredibly boring idea.

Hmm. Depeche Mode can't be called an industrial band, therefore certainly aren't "fathers of" it, but it's not an overstatement to say that they in fact have been an influence to many industrial and non-industrial bands. Hell, they are a band that has invented their own style.

Covering a Depeche Mode song is silly, because it's impossbile to top the original song. Hooverphonic's version of "Shake The Disease" doesn't differ much from the original song and that's why it isn't really special.

For once I have to disagree with you... I find original DM pretty bland (I can never listen to more than 3 in a row), but covers are often quite enjoyable instead.
I suggest "Enjoy the sounds - A tribute to Depeche Mode" to everyone (with contribution from Psyche, No Comment, Lights Of Euphoria, In Strict Confidence, cut.rate.box and many other, although not enough still).

I find original DM kinda straightforward - just the basics, but nothing more. Covers may sometimes then overdo it, but I like lots of beats and squeeky, chirpy things, so it suits me!

I always have this image of MM at home at night sensibly attired pouring over his pension plan and investment portfolio. His mix of I get along might have been 'interesting' though

I forgot to put in my earler post that this guy is totally un original in the sense that 'rock' music is littered with corporate rebels, as Flaffer comments "selling angst". His faux sincereity and rehersed anti capitalist diatribes I find particualry grating........

bit like Radiohead anti-capitalist stance - last year at Glastonbury they had their own merchandise pyramid thing selling a huge range of gear including plastic macs, badges, posters etc. etc. two days before they performed - most of the anti capitalist lot are signed to multi-nationals as well

but have never liked his covers - sweet dreams was bad and tainted love was worse

I liked " Tainted Love" version, well let´s see the next one how is going to be.

I don´t see poor making a version of Depeche Mode if you like the artist who makes the version. I love Sandra´s "Freelove" version, for instance.
