How much further can "two" go ?

Probably not the best discussion to have but does anyone else ask themselves "how much further will Pet Shop Boys continue?". We have had periods (not many thankfully) that Neil & Chris have probably thought about calling it a day ; "Pet Shop Boys to close shop" was headlines in a tabloid paper back in early 90's. Chris only appearing as a lampshade in video for Yesterday, When I Was Mad. Bad sales of Nightlife tour tickets. Neil asking the question to Chris "shall we just give up?" but Chris never answered because he's partially deaf.
I for one can't imagine life without Pet Shop Boys even though their music will live on but with their age it's obviously going to happen within the next TEN years. The music industry has changed dramatically but thankfully Pet Shop Boys have managed to deal with all the hurdles. Their Live experiences have been phenomenal & I do believe they have at least 3 more shows left in them. I always enjoy these breaks between different projects from the boys & look forward to the next ones... . As brilliant as it is to have a forthcoming reissues project on the horizon how many more projects (Albums, Singles, tours & musicals) can we look forward to before they release Definitive Pet Shop Boys or Pet Shop Boys, Thankyou or Finally Pet Shop Boys....?
I've always liked Bye Pet Shop Boys, it can mean two things !!

They have at least two more albums in the can, with the Price trilogy apparently being still in the works. If we don't get another short release window like they did with Elysium and Electric the third album should appear around 2018-2019. What they will do from 2020 onwards is beyond anyone's guessing - probably more one-off, scaled down shows and side projects (for instance they still haven't had the chance to write a complete soundtrack for a contemporary movie). Or maybe in 2024, when Neil will be 70, they'll wrap it up and start writing cheesy pop songs for Xenomania stars

Definitely the two remaining trilogy discs then perhaps one, big, final one. In the beginning Neil used to joke that their final album was written and kept in a drawer. The final one to be entitled "Posthumously."

I don't think they are considering retirement yet, clearly they love what they do, they will continue at least untill 2020 if you ask me.

If they enjoy what they do and are capable of doing it then there is no reason to stop.

It is really rude question. Of course they will go on with with new albums, tours and so until they will breathe....
..I can imagine in 2030 they doing their tours...Chris sitting on chair probablly bit snoring every now and then, but it doesn t matter, because Neil will have his bed in there again, and their dancers will do lot of chaos
..still I be there to try catch on some sound, some sound of Neil s voice and catch his eyes,and the goog thing about it will be that he will not remember me at all SO I can try again and again until he will sing in my face " Just this one, just say YES, pleeeese"

I can imagine that they will want to keep song writing & recording for as long as is practical.
For some reason, based on nothing in particular, I could imagine Chris not wanting to do shows anymore & keep a very low profile

I could be wrong though, but I get the feeling he doesn't like being "seen" very much now.

I didn't read the full post, but I think it's safe to say the duo will be around and together for much much longer. they have excellent consistency and said in an interview they plan to keep making music for decades to come.
I imagine they'll be like Kraftwerk or Neil Young, keep performing and making music (I know Kraftwerk aren't making music) into their old years.
Only physical health from old age will stop them, like Phil Collins.
With Phil Collins he kept drumming until he physically couldn't, then stuck to singing until he physically couldn't, now he's writing music.
PSB are creative enough that I doubt their flame with fade out.

It's grim to think about PSB coming to an end, but they seem to take care of themselves so I imagine they'll physically age well and be able to keep doing what they're doing for a long time, even if they get wrinkled.

For me their music touched my soul, I hear Neil s voice and see him - feel him..

But if you were asking for exaple when Madonna is going to end, I would not mind if it was today, because there are much better, specially younger, sexy girls than old Madonna..

I think the Price trilogy is about touring. So more banging and lasers. Quicker albums. I'm expecting an album along the lines of Very or Yes (ie: pop single themed album, rather than extended dance album)

After that I think they will do a good few other projects. More low key. More earthy stuff. Fundamental / ballet / silent movie soundtrack type stuff.

Considering all the aged rockers out there these days, still touring, sometimes even into their 70s, I think the Boys still have at *least* ten more good, productive years in them, and perhaps a good deal more. After all, what they do onstage is a lot less strenuous than what we would expect from someone like Mick Jagger or Pete Townshend. And, to be sure, they don't need to continue touring to be productive. They could "retire" to the studio, so to speak.

Of course, it all boils down to their interest and what they feel up to, with the fickle finger of fate playing an awfully big part as well.

This was a fun thread to revisit 11 years later. Wayne and Sage seem to have accurately predicted that Neil and Chris weren't going anywhere. Jasonjohn read the room well with the comment about more earthy stuff (I think Nonetheless qualifies) and the work they've been doing on the side (that we know about) of late fits too.

I don't know that anyone could have predicted Obscure, and we were still a good way off of Dreamworld in 2015 too.
