RIP Black

#1 Post by No Muscle Mary »

Awful news coming out of Cork tonight. Black, aka, Colin Vearncombe, best known for his song Wonderful Life, has passed away at Cork University Hospital. He had been in an induced coma since a car crash earlier this month, when the 53-year-old was travelling from his home in Schull to Cork Airport. RIP.

Sorry to hear that. What a year this is turning out to be.

The sun's in your eyes
the heat is in your hair
They seem to hate you
because you're there
And I need a friend
oh I need a friend
to make me happy
Not stand here on my own
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

A classic bittersweet song, one of those rare records that remind me of the teenage, angst-ridden me. Poignant then, poignant now.

Ironic that the least famous of the musical celebrities that have sadly departed this month is the one who touched me most.

Drico.

Bittersweet indeed. Many people think it's a happy song.

Colin Vearncombe backstage at the start of Black's 1993 tour, reflecting on this song: "It's another one of life's rich ironies that because my first marriage messed up in a very big way, I ended up writing a couple of songs that were the most successful I've ever written. My ex-wife is indirectly responsible for me having a hit," he says. "It makes me smile," he laughs.

Greetings,

RIP Colin.

The Wonderful Life album spawned a few great singles, but it was the self-titled Black album that was his true masterpiece.

Thank you for the music.

Retro. :)

I only know him for that one song but I still quite like it and this is no way to die, no more than cancer.
