There's some mean and weird remarks in the comments section for some reason. I bring it up because it's quite funny, this one is the best:

'No. They've done more to harm the image of man, than anyone else. People think 'sensitive man' and they think 'Pet Shop Boys' instead of the designer of the atomic bomb or a racing yacht.'

An excellent first day of the Symposium, we were made to feel very welcome and there were plenty of breaks for tea, coffee, snacks and lunch as well as a drinks reception. The speakers were all very different and each threw fascinating light onto their chosen topics.

Remark 's DJ set was sensational and I realised that I had spent an evening dancing the Wee Red Bar years ago when I first visited Edinburgh as a friend of mine was DJing there. Thanks, sorry not to make it more detailed but I am energised yet shattered! We have listened to many wonderful speakers using words like "intertextuality" and "semiotics" but eventually one gets used to some of the academic lingo. The speakers were being filmed and recorded, so I hope the organisers do get to share this material as they hope to.

Many of the papers were very humorous and it seems there is a wealth of gentle affectionate humour possible around issues of gayness in PS Boys ' work that was is not the slightest bit offensive to me as a gay man. In fact I could infer that many of the speakers were gay and some told us up front.

It was particularly delightful for me to have several chats with Dusty Springfield's biographer, Lucy O'Brien and we discovered we have a friend in common. In my case the friend in question is also one of my supervisors at work.

The Symposium has made the Boys' work feel even richer and wider for me and highlighted many fruitful ways of thinking about the repercussions of their work, as well as the percussion. (Boom boom!) It was a pleasure to be in the room with extremely attentive co-delegates and have many delightful chats during the coffee breaks and lunch as well as the reception.

Wow what an incredible few days in Edinburgh. I'm still reeling from the experience and again a massive thanks to the Symposium event organisers who put so much thought and effort into the event. I was thrilled and honoured to DJ the event. I'm going to master my DJ set this week and post it so that all who attended can relive the amazing night, and so that those who couldn't can enjoy the mix. The set, called "Remark presents Pet Shop Boys: Encomium 1986 – 2016", will be streamed exclusively on Mixcloud which allows for authorised streaming of DJ mixes.

It was great too to meet some of the forum fans and put real faces to their avatars Probably the most exciting thing for me was actually hearing all of these songs from their catalogue played out live and LOUD...I was amazed at how good they still sound when cranked up on a dance floor and played the way they are intended to be. I particularly had this revelation during Left To My Own Devices...WOW what a bass line...it WANTS to be played through massive subwoofers!

Below is my setlist. I included a song/remix from every studio album, and the set was loosely organised into three ~1 hour sections, starting at 123 beats per minute and climaxing at 130 beats per minute. Such a wonderful collection of tracks to hear and dance to from the PSB 30 year history!

Well...I made it for an hour on the Friday and have been ridiculously ill since, so completely gutted...At least I got my delegate pack and have a few spare postcards if anyone in the UK wants to DM me their postal address to send on when I'm well.
A friend of mine works at ECA and works with the students who created the artwork so I might be able to eventually get my hands on some of the promo materials.
From the minimal time spent everything was as brilliant as you'd expect. Better to have loved and lost...
