How M/A/R/R/S' 'Pump Up the Volume' Became Dance Music's First Pop Hit

Following death of song's co-creator Steve Young, a look at how a niche DJ record infiltrated the mainstream

I did not know this was the same Dave Dorrell who managed the PSB, also small reference to Arthur Baker.

Such a small world.

To call it the first dance hit is absurdly wrong. House? Maybe. I remember vaguely when this came out and wondering what on Earth was going on? It was like nothing I'd heard.

This was the first DJ created song that was created for the dance floor to have mainstream success on the pop charts is their point. Disco was produced for the club and radio. This was never produced as an intention as a radio hit.
