Electric had at this time in its chartlife sold a bit more than Super.

And much tighter budgets. Let's face it: Ever since they joined Kobalt, the production has been stripped down to a producer and an engineer and an occassional background singer. Gone are the days of lavish orchestras.

I don't miss the lavish orchestras. There's only so many times you can pull that trick before your essence is drowned in overblown stringage.

Which is why I am strangely cold to the idea of them performing with philharmonic orchestras and a token Johnny Marr. There wasn't an orchestra in sight on Please, and there's an argument that their raw sound is them at their definitive best.

that is intentional, surely - both Electric and Super are electronic albums, and music technology is so cheap and accessible these days that you don't need a lavish studio with numerous personnel to create brilliant electronic music

Very true, and, more to the point, you don't need a real orchestra anymore.

I must admit to be underwelmed by the Concrete show with all its additional musicians and orchestras.

Woulda sounded just as good without the band of musical luvvies joining in (backing vocals too)

Yes, possibly the days of lavish orchestras are gone. But I'm not so sure that the "sound" is. Production technology/techniques have improved so much over the last decade. Now consider the massive backlog of real orchestral samples/sounds the PSB own (and have used in the past)... and I wouldn't rule anything out... at least from the listener's perspective.

Also, don't forget potential (future) one-off projects with the BBC, etc.

But, generally, I think you're right, the more stripped-down sound suits them well (harkening back to Please). It's a more current sound, and I strongly suspect the PSB will benefit form it... as they gave been doing recently

By February 2017:33,041. So 40,000 by now is probably not far off the mark.

Fundamental had a great blend of orchestra and electronic. We'll see that again.
