Another classic example of when the demo is miles better than the released version. I don’t like the Electric version of the track - never been a fan of it at all. But the demo is just brilliant. Wow

Ok then...

This sounds (in parts) like it could have easily suited their first album "Please". And I mean that in the best possible way.

In my, not so humble opinion, the PSB should definitely have included this track (as a more developed studio master) on their "Vocal" single release as an alternate PSB mix.

Furthermore, I'd be fine if Stuart Price was involved, PROVIDED THAT he and the PSB ensured that most of the main elements of this demo REMAINED. In particular, the fantastic synth hook, riff (or whatever).

That distinctive ear-worm synth sound is classic Chris Lowe.

Do we know yet if this is the first demo of Vocal, without any input from Dawson? The problem, I think, is that the sound of his productions is too stripped down for PSB. Besides, at the time he didn't seem to have a lot of familiarity with the PSB catalogue, a bit like Higgins; unlike Higgins, though, at least Dawson actually tried to balance his sound with the PSB own thing, but it was a tricky mission and the results inevitably varied from good and original (Leaving, Requiem) to odd and forced (Ego music, Hold on, the short mix of Woods). It doesn't surprise me that after working with Higgins and with Dawson they chose a producer like Price, who's much closer to their universe...

I wholly disagree - I think Higgins understood PSB. Dawson is a bland US product that produced a bland PSB album. This demo is evidence of how vanilla he made them. Price is a bit of a one-trick-pony too, which is why stretching him over three albums could take it a bit too far.

I love Vocal on electric - but have always been curious as to how it sounded before Price got to it - as I always imagined he did LOADS of work on it.

I've not heard these demos yet - I'll wait until I get the albums, but the Loving Kind I've always adored and demonstrates why Lowe often dislikes their best tracks - eg. Indefinite leave to remain (particularly the demo)

It's lovely hearing these demo tracks, but sorry the Electric version of "Vocal" and the Girls Aloud version of "The Loving Kind" are miles and miles better.

I haven't heard the demo yet, but my point's that Higgins made Yes sound like a Xenomania record with some input from PSB. The songs are well written as usual, but hearing it now a lot of the production sounds calculated, much colder and more sterile than it did at the time. It hasn't aged very well, I think. On the other hand Elysium, while obviously flawed, regained some of the classic PSB warmth that's totally missing on Yes.
