De/Vision....

Does anyone here know of them? They are a German synthpop duo. I think they are excellent. They have a new album out soon.

But to answer your question: basically all off-topic threads where I mention bands I like. No-one ever quotes me to say "hey, I like them too", so it's perfectly fine - you're not the only who hasn't been paying attention then.

Sorry, not really. I'm a huge fan of Depeche Mode and during the early/mid-Nineties I went through a phase I bought lots of records by bands clearly influenced by DM. But I grew out of them really fast. Bands like De/Vision, Mesh, KieTheVez, Electric Machinery sounded nice but after a few listens I found them lacking the substance and originality that's so evident in DM. I have not heard anything by Melotron and Distain!, so I can't comment on them, though. And I haven't heard anything by Camouflage after their dire Meanwhile album in the early Nineties.

They do lack the substance and lyrical quality perhaps, but Mesh and De/Vision have better melodies than Depeche Mode. Both Mesh and De/Vision have improved considerably over the years, while Camouflage made a good album last year.

I really liked the first two albums by Camuflage which I think were great. I know of De/Vision and loved the song "Blue moon" but I'm not a huge fan.

Has anyone heard of Psyche? They are less of a Depeche Mode clone, you could say they are remotely influenced by the early Soft Cell stuff. They even did a funny version of their classic "Sex dwarf". The singer is Canadian but lives in Germany (Bochum). You might like their two latest albums "Babylon delux" and "The hiding place".

As for silly Sythie pop bands, check out SPOCK, who do funny Star Trek/ Science Fiction inspired electro pop, or whatever you wanna call it.

I guess it's also a matter of age. You're 12 years younger than me, so you listen to all these bands as equals, whereas DM really meant the world to me during the years 1986-1992 when they sounded like no-one else. So I can't really listen to Iris & co. on their own merits, because I just keep hearing the DM influences and nothing else.

I like Iris, Melotron and Mesh. Camouflage is good, but a bit lame for my taste. I have not heard of the two other bands. Also, if you had read the April Listening Thread, you would know that I like Iris and Melotron. ...it's pretty obvious.

And what comes to these bands copying DM, it's very clear that you can see the influence there. I too am a huge fan of DM, but can't see the DM influnce as a demerit. The thing is that DM are in their own way leaders and pioneers in music, so I think it's very understandable that many bands sound a lot like them. Besides, I've never heard anyone complain that many bands out there sound like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or whatever - it's just "retro" and people think it's just cool to sound like someone else. ...also, I don't think Iris & co. sound like DM, they all have their own unique sounds.

Yes, Psyche is a great synthpop band too.

Yeah, this must be the best off-topic thread ever!!!

I've always find it strange (not to mention sickening) that so many PSB fans here are into Kylie, Madonna or god-forbid Celine, rather than going mad over all these synth pop bands.
Some weeks ago there were many thread on at least two of them aforementioned popbitches and knowing many members here are into this cheap, bland, way-too-easy kinda pop, made me feel ashamed of being a PSB fan. I hate going e-shopping and coming across such ads as "If you like PSB you may also like these: ..." and then they list all them dull bands and singers.

Ok, enough of moaning (even though it was justifiable).
Erm, guess I don't have anything else to say besides moaning then... Later perhaps

Yeah, you're right. It's strange that so many PSB fans have terribly bad taste. ...and I'm not only talking about music here.

I don't mind the DM infuence. They are a great band to be influenced by, after all. It's just that to my ears most of the bands mentioned haven't contributed enough of their own to make themselves sound interesting. (Although Mesh steal from NIN too - but mostly from the more DM-infuenced NIN stuff). And the main difference is, that DM actually make uplifting music, whereasmany of their copycats seem to wallow in their misery, thats' only part of the DM experience.

I do like stuff like And One, Dance Or Die, Apoptygma Berzerk, Syntex and Ladytron though, so I'm not totally immune to the second wave of synth-pop.
