New Erasure album

I saw Erasure at the Milton Keynes bowl for their Wild! tour finale. They were fabulous. Support from Adamski, Was not Was and Electribe 101. Broadcast on radio one. I remember thinking at the time”why aren’t PSB selling out MK bowl?” “Where the radio one live broadcast for performance or mcmlxxxix?” At that point Erasure seemed like they could do no wrong. By 1995 though, their sound hasn’t evolved and Britpop swept everything else away. In hindsight, Bilingual, with its Latin influences, weathered the storm because it sounded so different to previous albums and sounded different to the charts at the time. The average 7” single buying public started to freeze out erasure because they still sounded the same. Yes, the eponymous album was a move (slightly) away from the 3 minute pop song but essentially it still sounded “erasurish”. In the end, quality songwriting and the ability to adapt their sound kept PSB relevant and eventually lauded by their peers.

I think the britpop movement did a lot of damage to both Erasure and PSB (and probably loads of other pop bands around at the time). Although PSB albums still feel like an event, neither band sells anything like they used too. Reasonable album chart placements (especially for PSB) and then the sales fall off a cliff for both.

Music kind of polarised in the mid 90’s between hard dance and guitar based pop. PSB leaned more to the former and through choosing interesting producers and spacing album releases out, they came through diminished but not extinguished. They seem to evolve with each new album and always bring something new...though I have found the last few a tad dated. I think PSB have a strong image too. Their visuals always feel well considered and have aged well.

Erasure...hmmm. I think the self titled album with its dreary and overlong lead single was a mistake given the music scene at the time. Cowboy was bright and breezy but strangely at the same time sounded old and tired. Personally I think the lyrical rot began to take hold at this point too. Loveboat was sonically different but Andy couldn’t get away with the campery any more and there must have been something going on behind the scenes as I don’t recall much promotion and there was only one single.

Since then each album has had a few good songs, but their tendency to self produce stifles creativity in my opinion. New song is ok but nothing new. If you played it next to some of their old songs to someone unfamiliar with Erasure, they’d be hard pressed to tell you which was the newest. But maybe that’s the point- I don’t know.

I actually like this one better than the first two, musically at least. Much closer to a more classic Erasure sound. Still not keen on Andy's lyrics which has quite honestly been the biggest problem for a while.

Not keen on the new Erasure album at all. In fact, both The Neon and PSB's Hotspot have both been a major let down for me and I won't be listening to either much at all. I fear the day may have finally come and that both groups are finally past it in regards to the reliable output we have all been used to. I guess it was always going to happen.
They will do OK in regards to touring and such which is good. Plenty of fans seem happy enough with the new stuff too which is also good I guess but then again there are those fans that seem happy with any and every release. I suppose we should appreciate the fact that both groups are still making music and I'll miss it when it stops.

OMG is this the most abysmal album by erasure ever, it makes Hotspot sound epic (compared to all other PSB albums, Hotspot for me seemed a wee tepid )

Maybe they wanted to do something more dancey, compared to their sobering World be Gone. But this music had no punch, no memorable hook/melodies and the lyrics

This is the kind of music the lovely drag queens from Drag Race make (b grade electro fare), I'm really surprised at this output

They need to work with a good producer again!

Yep. On Tomorrow's World they worked with FrankMusic and I thought his input was what made it the excellent record it was!

The majority of Erasure fans seem to love it though! I just don't get it?

Yep, absolutely agree, still listen to that regularly.

This, for me, is by far the worst Erasure album ever! Soulless, melodyless, unmemorable, and just sounds like something they put together in a day!

A real shame! I am shocked that there are lots of Erasure fans on the Erasure forum that appear to love it! I guess some people love everything regardless. Make no excuses, I'm grateful they are still releasing music but to say I'm disappointed is a gross understatement!

The synths are just fabulous! But Andy's lyrics...not even creative. Sad. I hope the instrumentals get released. Vince really made some great pop music.

The eponymous Erasure album is highly underrated in my opinion.

Indeed it is. One of the best albums of the 90s. Probably my favorite album by Erasure, although depending on my mood "Wild!" or " I say" x3 are right up there as well.

I think Erasure has been back on form lateley, booth the original non christmas tracks on the christmas album and "The Violet flame" was really good and "world be gone" is not bad either. Pre odered the "The neon" and are still waiting to recive it. I have not listened to any of the pre released songs and Will not do so until i get my physical copy. I cant say I expect much after reading the rewievs here.

It’s not a bad album. Certainly not their worse. Mid range I’d say. Lyrics aside it has its moments. The mixing seems a bit off to me though- a lot of sounds get lost. Feels like it needs more space to breathe.
