I always wonder why artists don't do a greatest extended hits collection - basically choose whatever they consider to be the very best remix for each single. It would be something original and different rather than repackaging the same old same old. Absolutely no interest in this collection, not even a new single to entice and not what I would even judge as a complete set of singles.

How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously was a 7 inch remix, not a 12"

I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing (7" Mix) was on Further Listening despite being remixed by The Beatmasters, so Seriously? could have been too. The Boys just didn't want it.

Apparently PSB also worked on the Beatmasters mix, which is why it was included on the Further Listening compilation (they only included their own mixes). They weren’t involved in the Seriously mix so it wasn’t included.

Of course not, but as I also wrote, the track from an a-side release that got the most airplay, was the one that the put on Smash.

Yes they were. Brothers In Rhythm made a 7" mix which is not the one that has been released on the 7" single (the 7" Perfect Attitude Mix - that is only available on the US Maxi-CD of Seriously). The mix that the Boys have used on the 7" single is re-edited with some vocal samples added, and I don't remember where I've read it but I recall the Boys saying it was their work.

I was thinking that was the case, thanks for confirming. It was mentioned in Literally iirc. They added the You gotta have funk” sample, which was misprinted as “fun” in Smash Hits, or it may the other way round

If you listen carefully, there's a couple of synth pad sounds taken from the Behaviour version added back in to the PSB 7" version as well that aren't present on the Perfect Attitude mix - I think in the second version and some of the choruses.

I don't have the UK double A-side 7", but I have the french 7" where the tracks have just been swapped. This mix of Seriously can be heard in the video for the song. You have vocal samples, vocoded "you gotta have funk" several times - "do you have a message for your fans, for your fans", and yes TwizzleUK, there are some synth pad from the album version too. None of these are present in any of the other Brothers In Rhythm remixes (extended mix, 7" Perfect Attitude Mix, Perfect Mood Mix and, of course, classical reprise).

why am I not hearing the pads? Is there a particular point that stands out?

I'll have to check the track later, but it's single notes played by a synth sound that's a bit like a choir voice. Certiainly during the second verse in the background now and then. And also picking out the melody of "How can you expect to be" in the chorus. The same parts are in the Behaviour version. So guess PSB got access to the multitracks of the Perfect Attitude 7" mix, edited it slightly differently and overdubbed some of those original parts, as well as the extra spoken bits to make their own 7' mix.
