I had been reading ''them'' to mean others around Afrika, but does it in this case mean embarrassing for Afrika themselves?

I wondered the same thing. A quick Google search returns articles that refer to Afrika as 'she'.

Am I right to understand 'they' as 'he+she' in a person who doesn't identify as either or as both?

‘They’ and ‘them’ can be used to refer to anyone.

“They were out jogging in the park.”

“It didn’t occur to them at all.”

Doesn’t need to be multiple people, doesn’t need to be someone who’s gender neutral.

True, it's just there was even more ambiguity as ''them'' could have also meant the band in your original post!
