With the FL release of the NY Ron Dean Miller mix this song finally got the sound it deserved. The Hague mix is too soft.Pinhead44 wrote: Tue 26 Mar 2024, 9:22 pm Track 10: Why Don’t We Live Together
Chronology: Please , Track 11
After the thrills, excitement, and emotions of the previous few songs, Please concludes with another fine track, about someone trying to convince their partner to move in with them. Although there are clearly some issues between them with the ‘you may not always love me, I may not care’ line, there are probably many co-habiting couples who actually feel this way about each other, and still live together very happily ! (7/10)
My total combined score for all tracks on Please = 82. Divided by, divided by 10 songs = an overall average of 8.2 / 10
Album Summary: With 9 quality tracks (only Violence being my minor disappointment), including 4 cracking single releases, Please quite rightly sits in my top 4 favourite PSB album’s. What a debut this was from the boys !

Track 11: A man could get arrested
Chronology: Please, Further Listening, Track 1 and Track 7
I've always been fond of the trilogy of mysterious, slightly sinister and hugely underrated b-sides of the early years. They appear linked to me, vignettes in a three-part mini series.
A man could get arrested exposes the ambition and frustration of unrequited love. That's my impression is a study of despondent self-awareness as a relationship expires in real time. Was that what it was? seems like its aftermath, the careful analysis of the doomed affair.
They're emblematic of the shadowy crystalline world that Chris begins to construct for Neil to wander in with a mixture of observant curiosity, bewilderment, and disillusion. You can almost picture his iconic figure, tall and gaunt with long coat flowing, wafting through the dark cityscape searching for true love against the odds...

A Dylan quote comes to mind "he's gone with the man in the long black coat".Drico One wrote: Wed 27 Mar 2024, 12:23 pm Track 11: A man could get arrested

Neil exploring the cityscape in his lyrics, not looking for love but for phenomena (sub-cultures if you like) is a trait only sometimes explored by them, but it might be one of my favourite aspects of PSB.

*Dylan didn't release Man In The Long Black Coat until 1989.... but I don't believe he was inspired by the West End girls video and era

A Man Could Get Arrested
There are 3 versions of this track. Separate to the 2 on FL Please cd there is the version that appears on Alternative, which I think has the best intro , and I'm pretty sure is the same version as my West End girls standard 12", so I'm not sure which 12" the FL track 1 is taken from, if anyone can shed some light? The 12" track version is shorter than the 7" as well, which is unusual.
In terms of the track itself, it has a lovely intro, on the alternative version, and a great final 30 seconds where Neil sings 'why don't we do it now' and the melody changes. Everything in-between is all a bit crazy and manic, in a good way. I like the 'of course I said I loved you, not just 'cause you insisted' lyric.

Yes, and of course there is nearly an exact lyric pinch on the last line of the chorus 'With all the love we had, and all the love we hide' From the 'all the love that we had and love that we hide' at the end of the original opportunities.

Love this track, maybe more than I should. The syncopation of the drum machine and the bass line are addictive. And thePinhead44 wrote: Tue 26 Mar 2024, 9:22 pm Track 10: Why Don’t We Live Together

One of the versions on the FL CD is unique and previously unreleased, only the "Alternative" version and the 7" b-side from the FL CD were previously available on vinyl.Pinhead44 wrote: Wed 27 Mar 2024, 8:04 pm A Man Could Get Arrested

I really dislike the 7" version. It's pretentiously over the top.
Re: Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless
The 7" is def the worst version and far too long. I imagine people got quite a shock putting that on back in '85 after the polished production of West End girls !daveid wrote: Wed 27 Mar 2024, 9:09 pm I really dislike the 7" version. It's pretentiously over the top.
