Word In Your Ear podcasts 621/623: Neil Tennant parts 1 and 2

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall at Somerset House that day (or at least the guy who brought the coffee). This just reinforces my teenage notion that Smash Hits would have been the BESTEST EVER place to work (sigh...)

Mark Ellen and David Hepworth do occasionally stop shouting over each other long enough to let Neil wax nostalgic about his introduction to the music press and the surprisingly large number of epochal events to which he seems to have been adjacent. (Please, somebody, tell me you have a scan of Neil's letter to the NME complaining about the violence at the Sex Pistols' Nashville Rooms gig!) And they must be thrilled about the fact that this conversation ran so long that there's enough gossip for two whole podcasts. It's a little hard to understand in places, especially when they get all excited and hysterical about something - some of y'all are going to need subtitles :D - and sometimes they veer dangerously close to being Old Men Shouting At Clouds, but overall it's a hoot to listen to and I'll be setting a reminder for the next episode.

They do rehash a lot of Neily history already covered in their earlier WIYE podcast from 2011, which is also very well worth a listen if you've never come across it before:

This has one of my all-time favorite Neil quotes, about how his opportunity arose to go to New York to meet Bobby O because the entire Smash Hits office wimped out of a chance to see The Police and interview Sting because it was only a ONE NIGHT TRIP:
"One might assume, that given a free trip to New York, the entire office would be gagging to do it. (pause) AU CONTRAIRE!"

I really enjoyed it. Apple Podcasts now has a transcript feature, but it won't let you copy/paste the full text, for obvious reasons I guess.

Loved it!

Do we have an idea of when Part 2 is being released? 🤔

Not yet. Hoping next week? Probably before Nonetheless is released, I'd guess.

Yes, It is a bit difficult to follow at times. English is not my first language, so all that echo doesn't help. Great conversation anyway!

Yup … listening now and it’s great

Sounds like the Dreamworld tour is going to continue into the year… Australia, New Zealand and Japan… and I may have misheard but think North America also?

I loved that Neil say they wrote ‘millions of songs’ over lockdown. He also skirted over the question on retirement. It’s a promising time for us Pet Heads
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

It's great to hear Neil in relaxed conversation like this. Would love to hear more of this kind of thing, and less of the usual "How did you two guys meet?" promo interview chaff.

Thank you!! I updated the first post with the link. That was hilarious - I bet they couldn't wait to get that one out! Exciting news for Aus/NZ/Japan fans, and I'm sure he did suggest that they were looking into a headlining North American tour.

I agree, it's nice to hear a different line of questions and answers, which I suspect has a lot to do with Ellen and Hepworth having a) more personal insight than the average interviewer and b) a platform that allows their subject to expound in full, because it doesn't sound like much, if anything, has been edited out. And they come up with some pretty savage gossip - just wow.

But the question still lingers - did Neil ever get the trash situation resolved? :?:

Yes, it's because they're basically old friends.

Yup. Maybe they should start a regular podcast. But ideally in an acoustically-treated room... 😀

Bad sound quality. I didn't get it much of the first part. I guess a lot of internal gibberish. But I'd like to hear a song where Neil tells the story of his trip to Stockholm to find Phil Collins and Abba-Frida.
And his assesment of pop music golden era 60s to beginning of 90s was quite intrigueing.

As mentioned in the podcast, the house Neil lived in when he moved to London aged 18. 324 Mount Pleasant Road, Tottenham.
