Your favourite lyric couplet from Nonetheless

#1 Post by rashomon »

Ok, we've had the album a week now and I imagine that some of Neil's lyrics are working their magic and having an inspiring or devastating effect on you.

So ... what is your favourite lyric couplet from Nonetheless?

Love is the law in it's entirety reads like poetry ... but I'm gonna give this from New London Boy a bit of visibility:

I’ll aim for the stars
and learn how to swim with the sharks
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

Oh God, where to start,

Catch a train then a bus
Well I’ve got it all sussed

Through the gate when you leave
there’s a fresh winter breeze
On the terrace it feels
like a Rossetti frieze

And on a wall you’ve hung
Babe Rainbow
framed from the Sunday Times
Enigmatic as the Mona Lisa
I read between your lines

Bright as sunshine
Bold as headlines
By chance or design
Fluttering
the latest thing
your pearls before the swine
Northern skies
and butterflies
It’s still light at ten
Moon is rising
Trees are sighing
poetry again

Such happy days
spent in idleness
Now the sea is warm
and the wine is young
Evening brings the action
and the main attraction
Love is a mood
and a slip of the tongue

This album is full of nuggets like these.
For your own good, call me tonight.

Lots to choose from:

Through the gate when you leave
there’s a fresh winter breeze
On the terrace it feels
like a Rossetti frieze

----

I may as well be naked
for I’ve nothing to hide
I can feel tears in my eyes
Are they really justified
by all that I’m leaving behind?

---

I’m always in love
I’m easily led
My life is a mess
like an unmade bed

---

Never trust your memories
Say a sentimental farewell
The leader of the Schlager band
he knows but he won’t tell

---

And maybe more
as an encore

---

Love is a profession
as old as time
Watch it and learn it
Study it and earn it
You’ve a head for business
and a heart for crime

---

Love is a mood
and a slip of the tongue
Love comes quickly, but is a catastrophe and a bourgeois construct etc.
