Depeche Mode - not good
Depeche Mode - not good
Just got a hold of "Black Celebration" in a 2nd hand store. My good it was dull, dark and too much posing - just like the recent stuff. I've been fond of a few DM songs over the years (Playing The Angel had a few good tracks as well as Violator of course) but how have they gotten away with this ridicilous image for so long? There isn't a lot of substance if you ask me.

They made some great music from the beginning, and they peaked with Violator which I think is a fantastic album, after that they lost me. They released some great tracks, some really dull ones. They could release a brilliant compilation album.

You feel [artist] is [not good] and you don't like this particular [album], because you [don't like it]. Why create a thread about your hatred of it? What is the purpose of doing that?
I don't really like early Depeche because Vince Clarke is a plonker, but you don't see me making threads or posts about it (apart from this one). Why the hate? What is your issue? All of your posts are like this.
You're the very definition of an online troll which in 2024 is baffling to me.

Re: Depeche Mode - not good
Sorry but Black Celebration is the album that fundamentally changed the way they sound and they way people perceived them. The album run of Black Celebration through to Songs Of Faith And Devotion is untouchable. The change of sound and output from 85 to 93 was incredible. After Gahan did his “ok look at me I nearly died” act and Wilder, quite rightly , jumped ship, they’ve done nothing of any merit or relevance. Just retread with diminished returns.
is is and isnt isnt

I can easily make an album's worth of DM material that I really like but almost none of that would be pre-Violator. I liked a lot of Playing The Angel but I've never understood their style. Is it goth-light? Or maybe it's their swagger I never really understood. It's sort of stands as a force field between them and me.
