New Tour

I have an idea for a different spin on a greatest hits tour, which would see them play Please and Actually in full. It could be billed as:

Pet Shop Boys: Imperial
Their early stuff, live

“We didn’t tour until 1989, by which time we’d already released three albums and our “imperial phase” was already over. Over the years we’ve often wondered what kind of show we’d have put on if we’d have toured sooner. This is that show - we’re playing our first two albums in full, plus some other hits and surprises.”

Alongside the mainstream draw of them playing all their biggest hits, we fans would get to hear them play the likes of Tonight is forever, Violence, I want a lover, Later tonight, Hit music, It couldn’t happen here and I want to wake up. Plus they could chuck in tracks like Always on my mind and In the night.

I appreciate it’s not the kind of thing they normally do, but it could be ace. Obviously I’d rather hear a b-sides show but this could be a different take on a hits tour.

There's a small indigenous community in the Brazilian rainforest who hasn't seen Dreamworld yet so expect it to roll on inexorably.

If promoters in other countries want to book them and they want to carry on dreamworld then there maybe dates for next year. In the meantime Chris and Neil are hopefully enjoying some well deserved time off. Guessing the 6music thing in November has been recorded already. As mentioned Neil is 70 now and it’s up to them if they want to perform anymore but there is still a demand and they aren’t going down the dumper so let’s wait and see, They may spend time working on the next album and we may get an announcement on the new musical soonish. As mentioned in a previous thread I’m just happy they are still going and will be patent to wait and I’m looking forward to hearing the demos/new tracks on the 411th edition of nonetheless.

They have a very loyal fan base and perhaps plans are already in place for the next tour with designers etc which I’m guessing will be 2026 if they can be arsed.

I'm sorta conscious of the age thing, my mother was an unstoppable worker and fit as a fiddle when she turned 70 but in the three years since, she has had cancer and atrial fibrillation which has really hit her hard. Very rarely sick or sorry before that and as performer, obviously on a much smaller scale, it was a real wrench for her to have to *really* slow down.

I'm in absolute awe at how Neil can pull off these performances night after night, plus all the rehearsals and travel, I know he's not Methuselah and he obviously takes care of himself, but I do hope he's around long enough to enjoy a nice retirement and I would not begrudge him a second of it. I know we should all live for the moment but I am sure we all know people who passed away before their time and didn't get to enjoy old age, and the boys certainly deserve that, however much I want them to keep going forever.

The one thing that the shows at the Opera House did prove, especially this year's run, is that the fans are prepared to pay (almost) any price to watch the boys in a more intimate venue, So a 'rarieties' run of shows, for us fanatics, at one venue, so they wouldn't need to travel, with minimal production could work financial for them, but realistically it is never going to happen. Chris can't even remember some of the b sides in some of the further listening notes, let alone learn how to play them live each night !

I don't think we will get a new large production from them at all now, Dreamworld is ready to go whenever any promoter is ready to pay the bucks, and if that doesn't happen, then I don't think we will get another large scale tour from them at all. The reason I think they will do more shows, particularly overseas, is that if you read the Pet texts when they are on tour, I think they do like to travel and see the sights, and touring allows them to do that also.

I think the last tour of PSB should be the most ambitious tour of their career full of musicians, dancers and stage design with all the fancy dresses and imaginery of PSB over the years. The world of PSB in full. Full of hits like Dreamland but also giving a chance to the most representative songs from each album.

No problem with the budget, the last ever tour of PSB would sell a lot.

With all due respect, God, no. What’s the difference between Dreamworld and an Imperial phase-focused tour if half of the current setlist is already made up of songs from that era anyway? I know older Petheads would be delighted because most of them have followed the Boys since that time, but a tour like that would only further position them as an 80s/heritage act, playing into the nostalgia factor. The 1989 tour was already a sort of Imperial phase tour, and it was great back then, but in 2024/2025, it doesn’t match the image they want to present to the world as a British international act.

Dreamworld was a good happy medium because older fans got to hear songs they hadn’t heard in a long time, us younger fans had a variety of eras (even though it was strongly Imperial phase-focused, as I mentioned before), and the general public (who I’d say were the main target) were satisfied with recognizing songs from their childhood or teenage years.

What I (and many younger and newer fans) want to see is more of their post-2000s material, which often gets overlooked in favor of Imperial phase songs. Tracks like Leaving, The last to die, Integral, Fugitive, and so on were fantastic live. Add newer songs like Say it to me, The Pop Kids, Will-o-the-wisp, and they could do so much with that. A b-sides tour would likely be a more popular idea across the whole fandom, rather than catering to just one specific section of it.

It wasn’t particularly a serious suggestion and I wouldn’t really want them to be the kind of act that would do something as blatantly retro as this. It was just a different take on a hits show which would still have mass appeal. Whichever way you look at it the general public are pretty much only interested in hearing 80s PSB. I do disagree that the age of a fan dictates which period of their music they would typically like the most though.

Peter Hook has been doing it with specific New Order albums and several years ago I saw Howard Jones on his tour playing his first two albums in full! x
