I have never heard the 1972 original version (or any other version), and I think "All the young dudes" (even the standard version) is a cathy song that is among the best PSB has released this year.

(I wonder how my reaction will be when I hear the 1972 version for the first time. Will I be disappointed?)

This is the number of PSB-songs (originally) released each year according to the PSB Song Chronology page at geowayne.com, where also the three forthcoming songs on the Nonetheless expanded edition, are included.

So when we know that songs performed by Alcatraz, Shirley Bassey and West End Girls are among the releases in 2009, we can safely say that 2024 has become PSB's most productive year ever (when it comes to songs released and performed by Pet Shop Boys).

If we count the German Schlager-Hitparade separately, it's 24 for '24!
Either way, a bumper year for PSB.

Bowie's own studio version, recorded in December 1972[36] during the sessions for Aladdin Sane, went unreleased until 1995 when it appeared in mono on the album Rarestonebowie. The song is quite good and the version of PSB is really good. It matches perfectly well with New London Boy (it talks about the generation of Neil, specially gay people, taking Bowie like a reference). That's why I think we could find one video for both songs.

They are putting a special effort for this fifth single.

Totally obsessed with the Boy Harsher remix. On repeat non stop. When the rap comes in it's absolutely amazing. And the new verses are so dreamy and melancholic. Loving this a lot.

Thoughts after spinning young Neil and young Chris for a day now ...

NEIL:

NLB - radio edit: I actually don't mind not having the rap section here and I have the album version there for that

ATYD: So much better than the awful version earlier with all those 'I'm a dude, dad' lines

BHLTTC: Lovely atmosphere but a touch too long. Has shades of Hey Headmaster/King of Rome/Into Thin Air ... and could easily have sat on the album. Neil's vocal is dreamy!

ATYD Delinquent version: Waaay better than the 'official' single version.

ATYD Richard X Longest version: Even better still!

ATYD Richard X edit: a bit unnecessary as we have the Longest version. BUT, I wonder if they did consider this for the official version? A shame as it works better than the one they went with.

NLB - Boy Harsher remix: Simply WOW! ... this is how you do it! A stunning remix and on repeat. This is going up there as one of my all time fave remixes. I get those 80s synth chills and the added vocals really elevate this. Would fit in so well on the Drive soundtrack.

Extremely underwhelmed by the output this time. All The Young Dudes tells me nothing. It might have some connotations for some people, perhaps because of Bowie nostalgia or references to 70's Britain or some kind of queer culture. But to me it's a song of no significance. My guess is it's a feeling I share with many non-UK-ers. My hopes were that PSB would give it the PSB treatment and make an excellent cover version but alas, it's a boring cover version. The remixes don't make anyting better.

The b-sides are ok but don't hold up to the quality from the earlier releases from Nonetheless. Beauty and Clean Air are songs PSB can do with a few pinkie toes in a lunch hour break.

The 7'' version of New London Boy is nothing special.
The remix of NLB adds new aspects but doesn't make me explode with delight.

Yes, I thought this too but I think it's just the different production / mixing. Comparing the vocals to All The Young Dudes original mix to the Richard X mix on the Neil CD and you can hear the Richard X mix is just better/brighter/clearer but sounds the same to Richard X mix on the Chris CD.

I'm loving the Boy Harsher remix of New London boy.

All the young nudes …

As great as it is that they're commissing videos this time around, they've all been a bit underwhelming. Beautiful people get very boring very quickly... I'd love a video with more of a narrative again, like Heart. The closest we got to that was Feel, and that was just two blokes having a silent drive to the beach and then getting out the car at the end.

Failing that, something with humour like Single-Bilingual or the Very campaign. I appreciate they're getting on, and maybe don't want to be so front and centre, but something with a bit of wit and imagination would be preferable to arty(-farty).
