Best middle eight

#1 Post by ea39 »

One of the many things that I think elevates PSB's songwriting above their peers is their ability to craft the perfect middle eight, or in layman's terms, the bit of the song that usually occurs about 2/3 of the way through and isn't the verse, chorus or the bridge in between them.

DJ culture ("Now, as a matter of pride...") comes to my mind as a particularly good one - a brilliant key change, and something incredibly elegant and autumnal about it. It really lifts the song.

It's a sin's ("Father forgive me") is probably just as epic, if not more epic, than the rest of the song. Urgent chords, Trevor Horn's kitchen sink production, and Neil's confessional booth pleas for absolution turning into indignation. Brilliant.

Any favourites?

Does this count?

"I didn’t know what year it was
I wondered if I’d died
and found a world
where living and dead
were walking side by side"

I actually feel like everything around me stops when it reaches this part. Nobel prize in nuclear science from me.

I suppose it's technically verse 3, but I agree it's a brilliant bit of the song. Eerie.

I'm not superstitious
Or really religious
Just to thyself be true
But now I think I'm starting to believe in fate
Because it delivered you

Great thread, I fully agree that they have nice middle eights.

The one in “Hey headmaster” (“there’s an invitation in the post…”) and the one in “To step aside” (“will I always need you?…”). Brilliant, wonderful and very psb.

You’re so extreme
I want to take you home with me
Come on, tell me one more time
I don’t mind
Baby, I don’t mind, I don’t mind

I don't want to be Mr Picky, but Trevor Horn didn't produce It's A Sin. A very interesting subject thread though..👍🏻

'I'd survive with only memories, If I could Change the way i feel, but I want more than only memories. A human touch to make them real...", wow. And more recently 'I am Always in Love, i am easily led, my life is a mess, like an unmade bed '.
